scary development, that's all I remember. And a good, exciting read.

Once you get used to the in-your-face directness of the dialogue and the brutal absurdism on display, this ends up being, next to Remarque's classic "All Quiet on the Western Front," one of the best anti-war messages ever.

A generous 3 stars. Just not sure what to make of this book. You can tell that the author is hesitant to get too deep into policy, so the book is a weird mix of pseudo-policy and touchy-feely.

Patricia Brigg's second (more like 2.5) story in the Alpha & Omega picks up shortly after Cry Wolf. If you are really interested in the full experience of the characters, you should also read her short story "The Seeing Eye" in Strange Brew, which introduces Tom and Moira, but it's not absolutely necessary the way that "Alpha and Omega" was necessary to understand Cry Wolf. Once again Charles and Anna work on strengthening their relationship despite all their emotional baggage. I think that this aspect of the story is one of my favorites because it is so real. Brigg's does a nice job of depicting the struggles of 2 people trying to establish trust in one another. I did really like the rest story of this book, which introduces werewolves from around the world, but I bumped it down to 3 stars because I found myself having to reread passages several times to figure out what was going on. I think part of the reason for this is that Briggs switches perspectives so many time in the book and these switches often come in the middle of a chapter. So you'll be reading along seeing things from Anna's perspective and then have a switch to Charles. Aside from that minor annoyance it was overall a good story.

I was surprised to see a two star rating on this book. Then again it is not in the same genre as Cantrell's other novels. Or perhaps because I did grow up in the suburban hills of Anahiem; and in the recent years I have experienced both the doldrums of unemployment and the frustration of having an unemployed partner. Regardless, I related to this story. I managed to empathize with the main character while concurrently feeling a sense of pure repulsion. As much as I loved Brain Box, and Containment I hope Cantrell doesn't abandon this kind of writing. I think maybe The Epoch Index used some of the same character development. Which may also be why I was able to really connect with those characters.

I TRIED to finish this book but I just couldn't. It just drags and drags and I couldn't continue with it. As a true romantic I love the movies made based on Sparks books but i find his writing drags too much for me to get through his books.

I am not in to non-fiction, but this was an amazing book to read. The writing itself was tedious at times because the writer is very eloquent and wordy at times, but worth the effort. I never thought about how much Poland was affected by the Holocaust and it was very enlightening to see that aspect. The story centers around a Polish zookeeper and his wife who help rescue and hide over 300 Jews in their zoo. Fascinating!

So far, this seems like a magical book, in the sense that it investigates the concrete realities of the "modern" age with an eye for how people's less "modern" knowledges have been submerged and yet, have answers to the human dilemna that are as salient, if not more, for modern human life. I think this author is very courageous and looks to expose anything, anywhere, as long as it serves to answer the question of how people can live better on earth. Very down to earth, but also very open to the occult, or the hidden wisdom of expolited, downtrodden or otherwise disempowered peoples. Each of the chapters is an essay she wrote for a specific occassion, and is meant to be read aloud. I think they definintely read like an essay that she meant to read aloud to her students or some audience who had a reason to be listening.
