It all started with Assignment Day because in Ember, "first we get our education. Then we serve our city." As a twelve year old, Lina is now in the real world, trying to keep the city running. Her classmate Doon, however, seems to be the only one who acknowledges the fact that they won't be able to just keep it running for very much longer, not doing things they way they have always been done. When Lina's little sister Poppy finds and eats the secret instructions about the city, Lina and Doon realize they have to work hard to figure out how to save the people of the Ember. I think I was expecting more out of this book because everyone was telling me it was so amazing. There were so many moments that I thought the author was going to do something amazing with the text, then I was let down. It was good, just not the best thing I've read recently. I could see this book taught in middle school. The subject isn't too difficult for them to understand, and I really thought it was timely. The issues of the environment not being good enough to support life anymore plays really well with current events (i.e. gas running out on us). The idea that struck me was the fact that everyone in the town besides Doon and Lina just expected someone else to solve the problem for them. We have to take action if we hope to solve these problems. It's a message that we need to send to students.

Let me just start off with saying that you need to be awake and alert when reading this book. There are many times that the story is full of action and plot, thus making it very engaging. But there are just as equal an amount of times when it dives into ancient politics and slows to a crawl where you begin to struggle to keep your eyes open. The book is still very enjoyable though. It does get confusing, because while there are times when Rutherfurd realizes the reader may not be familiar with the ancient rules and regulations of Ireland, he also sometimes gives you the benefit of the doubt that you will understand everything he's talking about. Also sometimes it seems he has difficulty describing scenes and pictures in a way that allows the reader to see what he's talking about. Not all the time, but sometimes I just couldn't see it. One thing that was a plus was that Rutherfurd really seemed to capture the spirit of the people he was writing about. Ireland no longer became a land mass but a living and breathing entity. Made so by her princes and princesses. I was delighted to learn about the role women played in Ireland, a stronger, smarter and more noble one. You also grow attached to the characters, at least the ones you get to know, others have just been placed in the story in a way that's hard to follow. At first it irked me that we started losing connection to the characters from the very beginning of the book. I understood they were dead and we wouldn't be seeing them, but I meant in refrences and descendants. Then I began to realize that it was Rutherfurd's way of showing how ancient Ireland began to be discarded and forgotten as the Vikings and English came. It was a way the reader could relate to the native Irish as they began to be forgotten. Overall the book was entertaining, filled with both fact and fiction. It can be a quite wordy and long read so prepare yourself. At times it can read kind of like a history book, and you often find yourself flipping to the front of the book where a sort of family tree has been assembled, that still doesn't help you keep track of all the characters. I'm excited to pick up the next book, The Rebels of Ireland, and see what that has in store for me.

Great writing which is what I expect from McCarthy. The story was another of his that took a long time to get into and follows a character you would never wish to know. I find this book a good character piece but lacking the compelling storyline that makes a great book for me. So good but not great.

I read it in high school and just didn't GET what the big deal was. I really loved all of the symbolism that appeared throughout the book, but while i was traveling i found a copy and read it in about 2 days and was surprised to find out i actually LOVE this book. I think the way Jane carries herself, the decisions she makes and the way she handles her position in life while always remaining true to herself is a message much better understood after experiencing some life lessons of your own...i have a much better appreciation for her character now than i did when i was 15, and consider her one of the best heroines of any book i have ever read.

I read this because one of my favorite authors wrote it, Kim Harrison. Now i have two series i love that she has written! This story was fun and a enjoyable read. I loved the characters and the plot. I'm anxious for her next installment for this series and the Hollows. While this story is toned down a bit for the younger adult readers, Kim's style is still there. If you're looking for a good book about reapers, angels, purple hair, and a singing guardian angel...this book is for you!

Do I know what it feels like to kill someone? Nope. Do I know what it feels like to be overtaken by sorrow and fear because of my actions? Yep.

i always end up loving mary gordon's stories about lonely, old women; my favorites are "the epiphany branch" and "death in naples."

Many a time I have wandered through the library shelves, knowing that I was in the mood for a very specific book and yet unable to find it no matter how I searched. When I first read American Gods, I knew I had found that book. It is my ideal, the perfect blend of realistic things and people being people and mythology and ODIN ODIN ODIN!, and I love it with an uncompromising and unceasing love. Doesn't mean you all have to as well, but I'm just saying. That's what it is for me.
