parts seemed really forced, and the overall storyline was a bit of a stretch, which is saying A LOT for a romance novel. parts were really sweet with the tortured and unloved hero, and the family oriented full of love heroine. the mothers were awful, and irritated the crap out of me. skipped over chunks of text because of them. :(

This book is the story of Louis Zamperini, a world-class runner who became a bombardier in WWII and survived through harrowing circumstances in the Pacific after being shot down. I have to admit that I kept saying "ok, he's going to die now" but it kept going, and that's what makes it such a compelling story. As with other POW veterans, he had issues when reinserting into "normal life", but the story ends on a high note which leaves you feeling good for the main character.

I skipped my TBR list and read this book cause I heard that there is going to be a TV show based on it this fall, so I needed to read the book before the TV spoiled it for me. Then when I was at the middle of my reading I saw the trailer for the show and discovered that it has nothing to do with the original plot. This book is fun to read, and fast paced, in fact it’s a pity that the TV show is not really going to follow the plot, cause it’s quite original though a bit predictable it still has some unexpected turns and the characters are not bad at all, except for Malcom which I totally disliked and truth to be said, I did wanted to slap Jane more than a couple of times. If I were her I should have done many, many things in a different way. But what really made me like the book and want to continue with the series was Lynne, she is perfect, all polite, and never ever loses the style I simply loved her.

Irving schafft es durch seine skurrilen Geschichten, seine besonderen Charaktere und dramatische Wendungen kombiniert mit komischen Elementen, seinen ganz eigenen, einzigartigen Stil zu entwickeln. Und der ist einfach großartig. Verrückte Geschichten, die sich grad an der Grenze des Unglaubwürdigen einfinden, aber eben nicht darüber. Unterhaltsam, traurig, witzig, dramatisch, komisch, .... Garp hat alles davon, ist ein typischer Irving, von denen, die ich bislang gelesen hab, vielleicht der typischste. Dabei sind die vorherrschenden Themen Frauen und Feminismus sowie Garps zu ausgeprägtes Sicherheitsbedürfnis und natürlich noch einiges mehr, schliesslich handelt es sich um eine ganze Lebensgeschichte. Wer noch nie Irving gelesen hat, dürfte mit diesem Werk ordentlich Appetit bekommen.
