i dunno. felt like necessary glue for the series rather than a good story in its own right. i suspect that when the series is finished and I do my full re-read of EVERYTHING in chronological order (because oh yes, that is so on my bucket list) it will be more satisfying. oh, and as Jon said -- this is the absolute worst book to pick if you're looking for an introduction to Brust's work. it really relies on you knowing all the characters and settings and backstories.

Looooooooooong book but pretty amazing once you finally make it through (I had to try twice before I finally did). I learned a great deal about the history of Japan, which I probably wouldn't have gotten if I hadn't read the book.
