I recommended this book to everyone because I think everyone being more informed about the welfare system in America is the beginning of better solutions. This book provides extensive information about the welfare system and it's history, and other relevant history, but it makes all of this information palpable by focusing on individual people involved. Any time anyone mentions anything about welfare I recomend this book, which is probably annoying, but I just want people to read it.

I found many parts of this book to be engrossing. And as a slow food advocate, it is certainly on message for me. But overall this book was not that engrossing; I found myself skipping some of the more desne, academic portions.

I grew up with Stephen King's books, and, having lived in Maine most of my life and harboring a coming-and-going desire to write fiction throughout most of that time, he will always be an inspiration, no matter how crappy some of his books are (and, really, even the worst of the lot are readable). The idea of making it big within any realm of popular entertainment while remaining in the state of Maine seems unfathomable, but King, God love him, is living proof that it can happen, it can be done. He is a source of more hope than he may realize. "It" is a fat, great, gooey clump of everything that is everything about Stephen King. Not much is scarier than growing up, and childhood horrors are vividly evoked throughout. All those horrible creatures that used to live under your bed and in your closet when you were seven? The entire cast of characters makes an appearance here. I'm admittedly not as well read as some, maybe even most, but I've yet to encounter a more frightening personification of evil than Pennywise the clown. It's a shame they had to make a dumb TV-movie version of the book, because now it's probably impossible for anyone not to think of Tim Curry while reading the clown scenes, but at least he did a good job. I happened to read "It" when I was about twelve or thirteen, the same age as most of the characters in the book. My parents were pretty strict about what I could and couldn't read and watch and listen to, but for some reason they were lenient when it came to Stephen King, which is funny since of all the books I could have checked out of the library, his were probably pound for pound the dirtiest things I could possibly be looking at, barring porn. It wasn't like they hadn't read him before. They knew what his stuff was like. I don't see them caring too much about my support of "local talent". What made him okay, in their eyes? It's interesting. Anyway, the scenes of kids just hanging out, making fun of each other, wasting time playing weird made-up games, fighting, crying...I felt nostalgia reading this. Nostalgia! At thirteen! Looking back fondly on times I was currently experiencing! That's amazing to me. I know I felt it. This is a great, great book, his masterpiece I think.

It's been a while since I've read this, and the most that I can remember is that I LOVED it. Which is obvoiusly not a common theme in other reviewers. Unfortunately, I forget exactly why I liked it so...
Art reflects characters' facial expressions well, especially Macharu. Storyline simple and enjoyable to read.
I really loved this book. Warning: it is really, REALLY long! Though it was long, it was very well written and didn't feel boring or sluggish. The details in the book painted a vivid picture of the life of Andras Levi. This isn't your typical Holocaust book. WWII doesn't even start until half-way through this book. Getting to know the characters so well before the horrors of the Holocaust began, made their losses all the more poignant. I was also very interested to read about the factors that contributed to Hitler's initial success: the rampant antisemitism throughout Europe, the popularity of Nationalism, the fear of Britain and France to revisit the death and destruction of WWI. I appreciated that this book focused more on the unexpected miracles, kindnesses, and victories rather than the meanness, horror, and destruction of WWII. Though there were some very sad parts of the book, it was balanced by a greater hope and happiness.

A startling account of Ambassador Dodd, assigned to Germany by FDR during the rise of Hiter's power. Primarily set in 1933-1934, Larson depicts life in Berlin through the eyes of the Ambassador, his scandalous daughter, and other important political figures through their daily journals and memoirs. While not a complete page-turner, it is an eye-opener on life and times of Germany (and Hitler) before WWII.

** spoiler alert ** I thought it was very good. The narrator gets into the normal everyday situations where everyone feels awkward, but thinks that they are the only ones who feel that way. But the author shows that there are some times when we all feel uncertain and socially retarded. I thought the ending was sort of abrupt and not in keeping with the whole story. After agonizing about college, and people, during the whole book, the speaker abandons all that in one page and goes off to college as he was expected to do. It felt like a tense ending, and a little bit like selling out his feelings, and desires at the last minute. Where as Holden Caulfield in the “Catcher and the Rye” ends in tragedy, this character simply decides at the last moment to conform to the society he fought against throughout the novel. Even though the ending was slightly less than satisfying, the rest of the book was amazing and insightful and made up for it 200%. I would still recommend this book to anyone who likes to realize that we are all alike, even when we feel painfully different.

Good--I am going to read the next one in the series, because the first one needed more explanation in it. I did enjoy it.
