I wasn't happy with this book while I was reading it. I wanted to somehow get into the book and kick the hero's ass a few times. I was disappointed by the romance between Phury and Cormia, but really enjoyed the underlying subplots.

I really liked this one - liked the Scots forensic biologist, loved that he is living in France, enjoyed his family life and his love life. Yes, the killer is predictable, but I did not care. I liked the playing out of the plot, the psychological insights and the geography of Paris and environs that the author so meticulously supplies.

3 1/2 star! This was an easy, enjoyable read with lots of potential. It is a story that involves the immortal Nicholas Flamel and twins Sophie & Josh whose lives take an unexpected twist. One day they have ordinary lives and the next day nothing is ordinary. If you liked Harry Potter and that type of fiction (all things magic), I think you would like this book. Gotta love the cliffhanger ending. I'm very interested to see how the story will play out in book 2. Here I go again reading yet another series:)

i approached this book with a pretty clean slate: it had been recommended by my sister (typically of good taste, natch) and i enjoy memoirs. reason 'nuff. i knew there was controversy surrounding its factual integrity, but hadn't read about that specifically. i also knew the book ought to stand on its own from a literary perspective, with or without controversy, so proceeded an open (eager?) mind. i don't know which aspects of the book were exaggerated by the author; frankly, NONE of it felt authentic to me. as a reader i was uninvested in his "struggle" and i rarely felt like any of the gruesome things that happened in the book were anything but choices the author made, never situations of circumstance or mistake or chance. nonetheless, frey patted himself on the back fairly consistently throughout this book for overcoming each self-constructed obstacle. i can't say i sympathized with his 'achievements' at any point; he was kind of a jerk to anyone who tried to help him, and subsequently (and thanklessly) took said person's help every single time. i felt like every sentence written in the book was an attempt at memorializing himself as a hero to anyone who'd listen. additionally, i couldn't help but read his dialogue as anything but the same tacky brevity of that during a shootoff in a western movie (james frey cast conveniently as the star/hero/tough guy, of course.) why is this book as widely-received as it is? i'm puzzled. maybe this memoir should have been filed under 'mystery.'

Someone gave this book to me because I am of mixed race and so is the main character. I've always been down with Faulkner's depiction of black people. OK, I don't know if that sentence really connects well with the ones it's between. Regardless, the back of the book really emphasized the fact that the hero--whose name I think is some kind something that leads to the initials J.C.--is torn between black and white, and I really did not want to hear it, so I waited awhile before reading it. When I did, I really liked it. Less about race than just being lost and also about having a fucked up childhood, unloved by parents, something I find really really hard to comprehend and which is truly tragic. Anyway having that childhood and then kind of colliding with another fucked up person and I guess (and this is all a very vague memory) how wonderful yet ultimately doomed such a collision is. I do like this book.

This is the first book in the "murder mystery/recipe books". It's fun light reading - your typical mystery series with the heroine who owns a bakery and solves crimes. The book is filled with recipes mentioned in the story - all of which sound amazing and don't seem difficult to make. I plan on reading the whole series, so you can tell I've enjoyed the book.
