With "Marked" PC Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast give us yet another troubled outcast girl marked as different, with a strange affinity for all things vampire (or vampyre, as it were). We have heard this story before. However the manner of the singling out is decidely unique. Call it a cross between Harry Potter and Twilight. Loser girl goes to vampire boarding school where she finds out she's actually really special and powerful... I would say this book, while not being the most inventive or original, does have merit. It offers something to the more mature female reader; someone young enough to really enjoy Twilight, but old enough to want more sex in her reading material. The Cast women have the teen angst and internal self-editing right on, even if it does turn into a rather annoying device after a while. And although I would categorize this book generally as fluff, I find myself intrigued about the next segment of Zoey Redbird's journey. I hazard to guess that "Marked" has a small but steady audience. And, while being unable to put a finger on why I want to read "Betrayed", I may just go get it from the library (not a book I need to own, however)... On second thought, I just read reviews of Book 2. I won't be searching it out any time soon. It looks like the predictability, and obnoxious references to pop culture don't quit. Combine that with an awkward rehashing of Book 1 (It was REALLY slow... I think I can remember it) and I feel no desire to read it. However, if someone throws it at my head I'll probably consume it. Let's face it, I read book 1 in a couple hours.
