Okay first of all, this is a good book and I liked it. I liked it a lot considering that I spent a lot of time having to put it down and walk away until I could stop being so angry at the parents of the author. It was like reading Frank McCourt's biography Angela's Ashes, where the parents have enough money to buy booze and smokes but can't quite feed the kids or get them medical care. When I was finished with the book I wanted to sit down with the writer and ask herself how she'd come through this childhood without being consumed by it. I imagine it would be a long and fascinating answer. A friend said that she thought Inattentive Mom and Drunk Dad were good parents because they managed to give their kids "the sky" and a sense of imagination. I think the sky isn't going to do you much good when you are cold, sick, hungry and don't have any decent clothes to wear to school. And you have to be your own parent because your Dad is too drunk to do it and your Mom feels that her kids are holding her back from being the great artist she could have been. Amazing writer.

This was fun, and I'm always excited to read anything that gives me another glimpse of my favourite characters in the Enderverse. Originally I had it pegged at 4 stars, since I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of it, but unfortunately the last couple of chapters let it down somewhat. Thus, 3 stars! Or maybe 3.5...

Very disappointed with this, I felt like it was merely written as a giant publicity plug for Global Warming!

Being a huge fan of Kim Wilkins work, it was with great curiosity and excitement that I picked up this book, written under her non de plume, Kimberely Freeman, and marking another genre for this incredibly talented writer. I already know what a masterful storyteller Wilkins is and, writing as Freemen, she doesn't disappoint. This tale of two women from the same family, told across two different time periods and in two hemispheres is compelling, tragic, thrilling and uplifting. Commencing in 1995 and swiftly moving back in time to 1930s Scotland, before shifting to Australia, it tells of one woman's search for love, place and above all, self and against the backdrop of the Depression and looming war. Beattie Blaxland starts as a woman moulded by her upbringing and the prejudices of class, sex and race. However, instead of being a woman who 'things are done to' she becomes a woman 'who does things' and, in doing so, forges a remarkable path into the future - and not only her own. That decades later, her supremely talented granddaughter, prima ballerina Emma, benefits from her grandmother's trailblazing only to have her comfortable world fall apart, is at first heart-breaking. But Emma is imbued with the Blaxland spirit and, the more she learns, through an unexpected legacy, about her grandmother's past, the more she learns about herself. This book gallops along, taking the reader by the hand and heart, plunging you into great joy and sorrow, tragedy and triumph. I read it in one sitting (well, it was broken by a general anesthetic - really!), but I couldn't put it down and longed to find out what happened. It's a powerful and moving tale about longing, loss, family, place, community and the various forces that shape the self within these and how, if we look deep enough, we can find the strength to endure what at first seems unendurable. Simply a beautiful story that I cannot recommend highly enough.

The problem that I had with this book is that I had no respect for the characters. They were all a little too pathetic in their own way, and they weren't very smart. It was hard to sympathize with them when they had such a huge hand in creating their own bad situations.

Took some effort to get through this one (it's for an upcoming book club or I don't think I would have finished it). Not exactly a "page-turner."

This 1868 classic is indeed a deathless book. Its messages are still applicable even after almost one and a half century since its first publication. Although the story revolved on the joys and sorrows of the March daughters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, the real character serving as a glue and bringing this novel to the accolade that it all deserves is Marmee. Her advices to the girls are timeless. One that I will always remember is that “it is better to be a happy old maid than an unhappy wife or be un-maidenly looking for a husband” When I was younger, I thought that old maids are miserable failed women. I had a change of perspective when later I met (through my wife’s family), happy and contented old maids. This novel reinforced that. I hope that my daughter will sometime soon find this book interesting to read so that she will also learn from the timeless advices of Marmee. As for style, it’s a light read and not overbearing as other classics. One fascinating style is that there are parts where Alcott speaks directly to the reader giving her own opinion about what is happening in the story. This is something that I rarely find in contemporary novelists. The exchanges of letters when Meg and Jo went overseas are also effective. I also enjoyed the poetry especially the last one where each daughter’s life was described beautifully by Jo. I also noted the frequent use of “by-and-by” and “tupsy-turvy” two words that are no longer common in everyday conversation that Alcott seems to enjoy using. It just reminded me of the word “glowered” in Stephanie Mayer’s Twilight saga
