Short, funny and metaphysical all at the same time. Makes a nice companion to Delillo's "White Noise."

Manhattan is My Beat is the first book in Jeffrey Deaver’s Rune series. The main character, Rune, is twenty and petite. She lives in a loft with a glass gazebo and her current employment is in a video store; she loves movies. Rune’s elderly friend is murdered and she becomes convinced he has found the million-dollar proceeds of a bank robbery in the 1930s. Determined to pursue this, she tangles with the NYPD, copywriters, actresses, hit men for the Mafia, illegal immigrants, screenwriters with Alzheimer’s and the US Marshals. Plenty of plot twists and quite a few laughs along the way. Rune seems to be a cross between Kinsey Milhone and Stephanie Plum. Refreshing!

An interesting explanation of brain chemistry as it relates to meditation, prayer, etc. The author goes a little too far in his simplifications, not only writing for an audience who doesn't know much neurobiology (good idea), but also for an audience who doesn't know much of anything (bad idea).

** spoiler alert ** This is an unabridged version running for 13 hours. Curledup.com Review Annie O'Harran is frazzled with all that is going on in her life. Besides being a single mother to her twelve-year-old daughter, Flora, Annie is planning a wedding to her doctor-boyfriend David and trying to finish a novel in time to meet the publisher's deadline. She decides that her best option is to get out of London and head to David's elderly aunt's home on the Cornish coast. So Annie and Flora pack up and head to Cornwall, blissfully unaware of the mishaps that will follow them there. The first night, they are awakened by strange noises from downstairs. Thinking they are being robbed, they sneak down to find Matt Malone, an American who rented the house from doddering Aunt Gertrude many months ago. Matt and Annie come to a tentative agreement: they will share the large home until they can work out another arrangement. But a few days turn into a couple of weeks. David doesn't visit as much as he had promised, Annie's sister, renting a home nearby, has difficulties with her own husband, and Matt's son comes for a visit. The relaxing summer Annie had planned goes completely haywire, but she discovers this isn't such a bad thing after all. The Wedding Day is an amusing British chick lit book. Readers will find themselves immersed in the characters' lives, particularly Annie's, since The Wedding Day is told in her first-person viewpoint. Although the main focus of the book is relationship development, the secondary focus is definitely family. Annie's extended family, including her ex-husband, sister, mother, and even her fiancé's relatives, all blend together and will have readers thinking about their own family dynamics. Annie is blind to her own weaknesses, especially when it comes to romance, but they are clear to everyone around her. The way she discovers her true desires and matures in her understanding of love is realistic and believable. Read by Suzy Aitchison
There were a LOT of characters in this novel--but once I got the "voices" down, I really enjoyed the story. Tan knows how to weave a tale!

What and incredible anthology. Both the novellas in this were fantastic. This began my love for the paranormal romance and started me reading both Christine Feehan and Marjorie Liu's work. I can't say enough good things about either of these stories. I will not part with this book and am putting it on my ereader as well.
I'm not generally a fan of ghost stories but this one is so well woven with the culture and the personalities of the characters, I enjoyed it a lot. It was more a story of compassion and love than a ghost story. Very well written.
This one reminded me of the James Herriot era, although it was set in Ireland a bit later. I really liked the description of the small town and the things that doctors had to do to pacify their patients. The book read really quickly and it was the type that made me sad it was over because I wanted to read more about the characters. I particularly liked both of the doctors and a few of the townspeople, in addition to the dog!
I taught myself how to knit from this book. I tend to reference it more for the how-tos than for the patterns, though I do like the patterns in it.
