A bit slow to start, with a somewhat unlikeable main character, this book does get better and develops into an interesting story. Bernadette is an only child, with one good friend, and a belief in the importance of intelligence. She's passionate about debating, and passionate about her new English teacher, Mr Malory. Malory is British, and determined to extend his students. He's also very nice looking. Malory becomes the coach of Bernadette and 4 other students in an academic quiz against a neighbouring private school. The intense school rivalry means a huge amount of attention is on the quiz team, and Bernadette and her team members find themselves engaged in an intense studying excercise. But are their methods legitimate? And did they really qualify with the marks they were given? A thoughtful read, it would suit a questioning teenager. The plot is difficult to follow sometimes, and the author assumes every reader will be American so readers who are not American will struggle sometimes with the schooling system, or fast food references. Anotehr off=putting feature is Bernadette herself, who is somewhat arrogant and judgemental. A nice character arc however, as she grows and learns through the decision making required to do what's right in this quiz.

Found this book on the bottom of a TBR Pile too big to look thru. Thats why I missed it for some time...Good thig I had the time to stft this weekend. Had only book 1 in paperback so now I want to have the set...Ordering as we speak. This book reminds me of the Changelings in a way...very interesting scientific world and I just adore that world. Our hero thinks he is cursed because he is ever haunted by weather. He can control it and Mother Nature plays games with him. Written by two famous paranormal authors, the story is both intelligent and steamy... If you havent read...a must try

This is one of the most marvellous pieces of writing, a compelling tale of love, buckling swashes, greed, honour and deceit. It is also the story within a story. Apparently William Goldman has spent many days reading the original, obscenely inflated, text to reduce it to a manageable and consistent story in which the characters can tell their story without being cluttered by pages of irrelefvant details. He has done a superb job of writing this story, no matter where the truth of its origin lies. Definitely a comfort read for those who need light hearted, well written fantasy where you know that True Love will prevail.

Reamde is interesting and has a lot of potential (as it should being a 900+ page book), but Stephenson introduces a lot of elements in his eloquent and descriptive long-windedness that never really pay off. Speaking of pay off, as the story builds to an exciting conclusion the actual ending is anti-climactic and while I enjoyed the epilogue, it did little to elucidate the final moments. The basic plot involves a billionaire with a shady past who figures out how to launder his money by creating a popular MMORPG (like World of Warcraft). Through a series of crazy plot twists and turns his niece ends up in the company of jihadists who intend to use her family to cross the U.S.-Canadian border and wreak havoc on the United States. While the MMORPG features prevalently in the beginning of the book as a way to get the plot moving this book is less about virtual reality and computer games and more about homeland security. Reamde may appear to be an intimidatingly long read, but its long chapters are broken up by frequent breaks/POV changes every 5-10 pages.

I was interested in the book because my boyfriend's mom is from Toisan and I thought this would be a great way to learn more about her and where she came from. The book is a quick read and it is interesting to learn about all the experiences of the author, his mom, and the whole family. I did feel that certain points in the book were repeated too much but it has the makings of a good read.

I would not call this one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, but it was interesting to see him combine elements of comedy and tragedy in the same work--something that I have never seen him do before. Now that I'm out of school, I would like to read the rest of his work; the stuff we never got to in class. This play was just the first stop on that journey.

Sadly I've only read the abridged version but the real thing is huge.

This is perhaps the greatest work of literary journalism ever written in the United States. A collection of "nonfiction novellas" that trace the paths of '30s radicals into the the harsher climate of the 1950s, it's an incredible summation not just of the time, but of American history and political radicalism. It's truly humbling to recall that he fashioned this classic with the simple tools of the journalist: personal interviews and old newspapers, plus his voracious appetite for novels, poems and plays. Kempton is a great writer. I re-read this book every year.
