Two for the Money is an omnibus edition of two novels, Bait Money and Blood Money, that Max Allan Collins originally wrote in 1973 and then revised for re-publication in 1981. He wrote them partly as a tribute to Donald E. Westlake's Parker series, which Westlake wrote under his Richard Stark pseudonym. Unlike Parker, however, Nolan is about as convincingly tough as a five-year-old wearing an eyepatch and pretending to smoke a cigarette. At no point in either of these novels does Nolan ever seem like anything more than what he is; the one-dimensional creation of a fawning fanboy who never misses an opportunity to remind us that Nolan looks exactly like Lee Van Cleef, a particularly banal and lazy form of description, not to mention adolescent and pathetic hero worship. There are apparently three more novels in Collins's Nolan series. They might be better than these two, but I'll probably never find out. Life's too short.

I bought this book because it was seriously discounted (the cover jacket had a tear on the spine) and I'd heard a lot of good things about Laurie Halse Anderson as an author. I wasn't disappointed. After a stop and drop (you know, you read the first ten or so pages of a book and get distracted by life) I ended up finishing this book in one sitting (about four hours). Usually I don't like books that get too fancy with formatting but for this particular novel it worked. I wish I could write a better review but my mind is still processing everything.

While reading this second book in the Outlander series was exhausting, I found myself once again pulled into 18th century Scotland and the intense action packed life of Jamie and Claire Fraser. Just shy of 1000 pages, DIA is funny, sad, heartwarming, and most of all has a love story that completely wins you over. I was thinking of throwing in my Outlander towel after this one, but the intrigue of Claire going back in time to find her true love that she thought to be dead might put me into book 3. If you can get past the length of the book, it's for sure a well written story that'll be worth your time if you enjoyed Outlander.

I saw T. Cooper speak at the New College and was instantly intrigued. The book did not disappointment. It mixes the story of Charles Lindbergh, an Eminem impersonator and a Jewish baby lost at Ellis Island to great effect. A friend of mine compared it to White Teeth by Zadie Smith and I would agree that it has a similar layered construction.

I don't think that this book is for everyone, since it is a sort of fairy tale, and somewhat unbelievable. Renee is a 54-year-old unattractive concierge in a Pairisian building of rich people who consider her a low-class servant. Actually, she is a autodidact. Paloma is a twelve year old resident of the apartments whom is also not what she appears. She wants to end her life by her 13th birthday. The journal entries of the two go back and forth with a cast of characters, almost like a play. Enter Ozu, a wealthy Japanese man who offers something other than his riches. A delightful treat that will have you crying tears of joy and sadness simultaneously.
