this was a good and fascinating read, and not nearly as sensational as the cover might lead you to believe. also, though it kept going back to the incident throughout, many parts of the book were not about the murder, but about the history and practice of mormonism. solid history-research-writing all around. hard to put down.

Sweet and caring Zulaikah is the second-oldest girl in her large family. They live in a small village in Afghanistan—a country that places a lot of importance on marriage prospects for their children. For Zulaikah, this reality is hard to take because she has a cleft palate, which makes her less desirable for a match in marriage. After watching her sister get married to an older wealthy man, Zulaikah wonders what her life will become other than helping to raise her younger siblings and doing chores. Things change completely when two things happen: first, when American soldiers arrive in their village, one of them notices Zulaikah’s mouth and offers her father the chance for her to have free surgery to fix her problem; and second, when she meets a former university professor in her village who offers to teach Zulaikah how to read and write. All of a sudden, her future is looking much brighter—but will her father allow her to follow her dreams? This is an excellent book. It’s fascinating how different a teen girl’s life in Afghanistan is from a teen girl’s life in the United States—but there are also many similarities, too. Those who enjoyed this book might also like Where the Streets Had a Name (Abdel-Fattah) and Jungle Crossing (Salter).

Delightful, odd fairy tale of a book.

i was in a pirate mood when we went down to key west this weekend, so this seemed like a good choice. it certainly is a classic, and good fun. though perhaps the most interesting part is the appendix in which the author explains how he plagiarized various elements of the story from other books (the parrot from robinson crusoe, the skeleton from poe, etc.) very entertaining.

Oh I love this book very dearly. A friend once told me she always heard Owen's voice as sounding like mine. She swears she meant it as a compliment.

Ah, Wodehouse in mid-season form: a towering country house, budding romances, drunken butlers, kidnapping, craziness, a curious local constabulary, and sweet harmonies plucked on the banjolele. All is well in Barmyland ... or nearly ... well, hmmm, to be clear and still kind, more than a dab of the plot is, to a sensitive modern construer, a dashed bit awkward in a wincing sort of way. Or as Jeeves with his uncanny foresight so hexametrically puts it, "Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis," which Englished turns out to be something like, "What was bally good fun in 1934, might come across as a bit of a whiffer 80 years on." Thank You, Jeeves is the first book-length Bertie & Jeeves adventure, and in spite of the dicey bits, you owe yourself a good wallowing in Wodehousian mayhem. Will you laugh from your gizzard? Of course. Will you think less of anyone due to their gender, race, or creed. Not likely. Will you run to the library to gobble up more Wodehouse? Absolutely!

A collection of short stories which I am not a big fan of. The stories were good, I just prefer full length books.
