My boyfriend seemed to think this book was hilarious, heartbreaking, and touching. I, um, didn't agree. I read it because it was in the house but I barely made it through. There are too many references to pop culture, and in my opinion it's really geared towards dudes. I just didn't care for it very much.

Very interesting format - each chapter is begins as a first chapter of a book

Ishiguro is a master of prose. At the moment it's hard for me to think of any other author(besides maybe Proust) who can drive the mental narration of 1st person better than him. I love history, especially the period of time between WWI and WWII, which this book encompasses. And though I usually don't like reading historical fiction about England(with it's prissy Jane Austin formalities and all), I found my sheltered mind opening up to its possibilities. The story, to me, is about how honor and loyalty can cause blindness, and is such a great topic for any generation. Wow, I am so glad to have found this author.
This is a crazy story!!! I enjoyed reading it!

The first chapter certainly caught my attention and made me uneasy! This book is told through the experiences and voices of different characters, all somehow involved in a scandal at a private school in Vermont. The event changes their lives drastically, maybe irrevocably, and the full truth of the situation doesn't arrive until the last chapter. I didn't think this was the best of Shreve's novels, but it did grab me and entertain me.

‘Girlz Just Wanna Be Loved’ by Liz Walker is one of the best books for teenage girls that I’ve ever read. It’s the kind of book I wish was around when I was discovering myself and acting crazy. The target audience points towards girls who have image problems, are confused about life, are thinkingg about sex or whose friends are thinking about it. Which is pretty much any teenage girl. A very weak two stars. So unless this is the only book you have when you are stuck in a deserted island, don't bother. It actually started out really good. Assertive heroine. Dark brooding hero. Mistaken identities. But then the middle gets all maudlin. The hero's 'tortured past' comes out of nowhere, the heroine loses her spunk and the "Big Mis" keeps going and going...and going (think Energizer Bunny without the cool factor). So basically the biggest crime in storytelling was committed...it became boring. I just lost interest in all the characters.

If this doesn't convince you that massive corporations can destroy nation-states at their leisure, then nothing will.
