Pirsig presents two books in one. For the philosophy buff, we have a fascinating look at what the undisclosed narrator defines as "Quality" and the trouble caused when there is a general lack of it in our everyday goings on. However (and I admittedly include myself in this group), for those who have gone a long time without brushing up on their metaphysics, it can be a thick read. You have two options: hit the internet and give yourself a good ole' fashioned Wikipedia philosophy enema, or bear with it and enjoy the "second" book: a book about people. Pirsig builds his Chautauqua around a motorcycle trip he and his son took back in the day. He uses the ongoing process of maintaining his motorcycle as a means to discuss the need to build a "Quality" relationship with the work we do - one based on care and self-devotion. However, the narrator (who is never actually pinpointed as Pirsig himself...but it's blatantly obvious if you read up on the author) has a troubled past. At one time, he "went insane," and refers to his disconnected self as a ghost of his past named Phaedrus. Phaedrus, described as an overly-analytical professor, lost his marbles when he dove a little TOO far into the philosophical aspects of Quality, to the point where he no longer felt such goodness in the world existed. The reader is on the edge of their proverbial seat throughout the book - will the narrator be reunited and become one again with the ghost of his past? What effect has the narrator's past and present had on his son? Will he ever just up-and-tell us WTF "Quality" IS, anyway?! Buy the book and find out! Seriously, it's a great read, and I enjoyed it... A word to the wise: there are multiple releases of the book. All of the stories are the same, but buy the one with the green paperback cover with the green cover (Harper Perennial Modern Classics). It contains a detailed forward and afterward that provide MUCH NEEDED CLOSURE regarding the storyline, as well as some awesome interviews with Pirsig himself.
