I actually read the English translation of this novel, Midnight Palace. Didn't love it but it kept me interested most of the way through. Was a good page turner up until about three-quarters of the way through but the final section of the book was a bit convoluted and it was hard to work out exactly what was going on. Not a bad read, and quite possibly some of the book's true magic was lost in translation.

What I enjoyed: - the beautiful, vivid descriptions of the Milderhurst castle and its surroundings - the characterisation of Edie, her mother and the three elderly Blythe sisters - the exploration of fiction's effect on people's life, and the complicated relationships between family members - the mystery of what happened 'that night'. What I didn't: - the pace - it could've moved a lot faster - the ending (but I shan't say why as I'm not a spoiler). Favourite quotes: 'All my life my mother has been an oracle, a brick wall of propriety, so to see her unsure, particularly in a situation that I meet without a wrinkle, tilts my world and makes the solid ground swirl like clouds beneath me. So I waited, and only when enough time had passed did I look up again, catch her eye, sure again now, confident, and wave with candour, as if only in that moment had I realized she was there.' 'I woke with a start, catching my dream in the process of dissolving. Tattered fancies hung like ghosts in the room's corners and I lay very still for a time, willing them not to dissipate.' 'It was one of the pinafores Saffy had sewn when Merry first arrived; made from a lovely piece of Liberty fabric ordered years ago, not because Saffy had a project in mind, but because it was simply too beautiful not to possess. It had languished ever since in the sewing cupboard, waiting patiently for Saffy to find it a purpose. And now she had.

I love books that take a well-known story and shake it up! I'm sure that this isn't a perfect novel, that there are holes to poke at, but I didn't have time to entertain skepticism when reading this. The author is charged with a difficult task. How do you write an origin story about one of pop culture's most infamous villains and create an interesting and sympathetic protagonist? Hart accomplishes this with skill and not a little bit of energy. The book is littered with nods to Barrie's original work and a faithful prequel to the Peter Pan story. James Matthew, ask King Jas., aka King Jas. Bastard, aka James Hook, is incredibly likable, disturbingly so. In real life, if you came across a teenage boy with bluish tints to his skin and blood that literally runs the color yellow, who talks to spiders and has perfected the most purposefully-annoying cackle in the world, you might not crown him your King. But what I loved about the character was his sense of justice. There were parts of the story where Capt. Hook's villainy shone through, but the cruelty was deserved. James Matthew is cruel to the cruel and vengeful toward the oppressor. He also shows great love and devotion to his friend, Jolly Roger Peter Davies and his 'pet' spider Elektra. Yes, there were a few times when if felt like the author manipulated events or characters to fit the Peter Pan canon instead of letting the story flow naturally and the book does feel over half-way through, but James Matthew is such a charismatic character that you stay on for the ride.
Kader Abdolah being one of my favourite writers my expectations of De Kraai were high. I was not disappointed as I liked the way he integrated fragments of classic Dutch literature into this short story.

The story of a mercenary army growing without oversight from the U.S. government should give alarm to all of us. Outsourcing and privitization of military operations creates a new "branch" of military ouside the law.
