The privaledged children of a highly visible politician in Africa plan a day out of their compound and while doing so are kidnapped. They are sold to garbage harvesters and go through a series of mis-adventures including: a traditionalist tribe cut off from the modern world, a soul eating cult that uses masks to communicate with their gods. Meanwhile, three detectives: the Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, known so for their strange genetic defects, are sent to find them.

Libby MADE me read this when we lived together in the gradplex in 2001. And she was right ... I did like it!

I've read Wil Wheaton's blog for about two years. Honestly before that I'd pretty much forgotten about the guy. I knew of him from my childhood watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was neither a Wesley fan nor a Wesley hater. He was merely another actor on a show I loved. However one cannot be a geek (which I could very well qualify as) surfing the Internet for long without running across the name Wil Wheaton. Of all places I first head about him in a Penny Arcade blog posting. As I read more about the guy and the transformation he'd gone through the more interested I became in his work. For one reason or another I never got around to getting any of his books. Sure I'd always meant to order one etc. etc. His book was impossible to find in the book store. Was it in the biography section or the Sci-Fi section (ridiculous.) So like most things I moved on. That all changed with Sunken Treasure. By that time I had purchased a Kindle both in order to satisfy my inner geek and to reduce the number of physical books I had cluttering the apartment (and the environment.) It was also around this time that Sunken Treasure was released as a PDF. I immediately purchased the book and put it on my Kindle. I loved what I read. The man was fascinating. He was real. He wasn't a Hollywood phony. He definitely wasn't a wash up. Instead I read real stories about someone who went through the same things that many of us have gone through. The self doubt, the struggles, and the emotions. I enjoyed it so much that when Just a Geek was released for the Kindle I immediately purchased it. However that's another review. If you're like me and you're curious about Wil Wheaton the writer then Sunken Treasure is a good place to start.

I enjoyed this more than #2. I liked the new team - I like her but dropping Annabeth for a bit was a good move.

I thought it was interesting but I don't like to be forced to read a book that I am not interested in.

The most disturbing thing I learned in this book is that municipal solid waste makes up only 2% of the nation's waste. For the household waste that is collected, there is an additional 12 billion tons (for 2004) of nonhazardous INDUSTRIAL waste, mining, agricultural, and hazardous waste collected.

This is my second reading of this masterful work of fiction. I've heard so many criticisms about the series after it became a huge hit that I thought I must have missed something. So I've decided to read the entire series again. So far, it is even better than the first time. When an author can create people who are so real that the reader feels the emotion and fears and hopes they experience, then no one has a right to disparage that as somehow insufficient or bad writing. Ms. Meyer is a creative genius and has afforded the world a solid gift in this tale.

So far, I'm pretty bored by this book. It's just a little too....academic for me. It's written like an essay...a really looooooong essay.

Read this on vacation looking for a fast paced beach read. Started out great and then went downhill. Too many lame twists and far fetched boring backstory. Had too much going on and the author trying way too hard. I wanted to like this one, but wound up disappointed. :(
