This is an autobiography... sort of. It's actually a series of vignettes, each of which is titled after an element in the periodic table. I think that the degree of autobiography varies from vignette to vignette. I read it a longish time ago, so the memory is a bit fuzzy, but I wanted to mention it for my fellow non-fiction peeps, because structurally, it's semi-ingenious. I can't give it a star rating, I read it too long ago. I'm ashamed that I don't remember it better, because I know I enjoyed it and was impressed by it at the time. Maybe it's time to read it again.

Book is special adapted version for kids of Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol". It was a quick easy read of the traditional Dickens classic. I found book at a Thrift Store and bought it. I still need to the original classic one day.

I admit to being a skeptic at first. This is not an original idea...woman gets divorced...woman in crisis...woman needs mind, body, soul healing...woman searches...woman finds. Despite that, Elizabeth Gilbert is incredibly witty and entertaining. Her insight is intellectual and honest. It's not about moping around depressed, and she barely spoke of her divorce (thank God). It's about humanity and what we need to be "happy" and fulfilled. I'm glad I read it and would recommend it to anyone (not just females).

It's an interesting book, but it's not as well written as I had hoped.
quite evident (to me) that it was her FIRST work.

I might have given this book 5 stars if I had read Great Expectations, but I haven't and so I did not get some of the parallels in this book. I originally read it because it was recommended reading if you were going to be visiting New Zealand (according to one of the travel books I read). Before I started reading it I was under the impression that it took place in New Zealand, but it turns out the author is from New Zealand and the majority of the book takes place in the Solomon Islands in the south Pacific. I still greatly enjoyed the story and found it to be heartbreaking and beautifully told. Great Expectations is going to be a priority for me to read in the near future, and then I may have to reread Mr Pip.
