I keep thinking I'm vampired out when it comes to fiction (and between Mormon sparkling vampires and moronic Sookie-loving vampires, who isn't?) And yet, once or twice a year I still pick up a vampire novel. Sometimes it's a well-intentioned dud like Fangland: A Novel but happily, sometimes it's a book like The Radleys. The Radleys are a family of vampires in contemporary suburban Yorkshire, England. They follow an abstinent lifestyle using a self-help tome called The Abstainer's Handbook as a guide. One of the best parts of the book is how much the Handbook sounds like a real, dreary self-help book ("Tips to prevent overwhelming blood thirst. #5: Watch golf.") Being an abstainer in this universe is a viable but dismal existence. The Radleys and their two teenage children (who don't even know at the beginning of the book that they are vampires) are subject to migraines, rashes, physical weakness, and bone pain and that's just for starters. Their somewhat normal but miserable existences are collectively shattered when their daughter Clara is attacked and nearly raped at a party, discovers she has fangs and that her attacker is unexpectedly pretty tasty. In a panic, Peter Radley calls his estranged brother, a notorious and very much practicing vampire for help. This sets in a motion a cascading series of misfortunes, unearthed family secrets and generally bad ideas. For recreational literature, this was perfect. The story was fun, original and surprisingly well-written. The book was very visual so I wasn't surprised to learn the movie rights have already been optioned by Alfonso Cuaron.

Holy cow....Holy Cow. THE definitive zombie horror book and one of the best, most well written books I've read from a modern author period. Not only does it send shivers up my spine with good fashion zombie horror, but the mere scope of the zombie disaster coupled with the in-depth (and extremely believable) interviews and the solutions of mankind gives this book a well deserved 5 stars.

Wayne took this on vacation a couple years ago, and I laughed at him. "You are reading a kids book?" Not his usual reading choice. But he said it was good, so when he was driving, I started reading it. It is a simple and sweet story and I loved it. And the title character (Winn Dixie) is a dog, so for me that made it even better. This is a book that both children and adults can love.

So far, this is a pretty good book. Amazon doesn't rate it highly, but I think it's pretty straightforward and gives you the basics of investing, really as fundamentals. A chapter on stocks, a chapter on bonds, etc. Not so much advice on tricks to investing, which I like. It's more about how the markets work. A background book...

I wish there was a way to give half-stars, because I think I would give this book three-and-a-half stars. The "voice" gets annoying after a while, and I couldn't figure out why every character sounded the same, but the plot is pretty engrossing and satisfying (it's the kind of book that could be described as "intricately" or "densely" plotted). Overall, enjoyable.
