One of the later (or more recent, I guess) Eve Dallas & Roarke books. The mystery in this is rather strongly based on the concept of Strangers on a Train, as you can guess by the title. It was a good, tight mystery in this one, and I like Eve & Roarke in this later stage of their marriage - they're more interesting, and their relationships with their friends are more interesting. (Someone's getting married, oooh!)

This is a hard one for me to rate. Sometimes I really liked it, and other times it was hokey. Maybe thats a reflection of me- I don't know. I felt it had a lot of good truths. I think it is worth the time to read.

** spoiler alert ** A very enjoyable book, nothing much happens but the characters are so interesting in a nice way that it is a most relaxing read. Ending was a bit sudden but for once I will let it off. Set in the spring in Italy and made me feel warm and springlike.

The first time I opened this book, I read the first page, shut it, grabbed another book off my bookshelf and read that instead. Wizard's First Rule just didn't grab me from the start. A few months or years later, I came back to it and gave it a more whole-hearted attempt. After pushing through the first few pages, the story grew on me, although I will admit I was not enthralled with the vanilla-flavored protagonist, Richard Rahl (here is my first gripe -- most of the characters have fantasy names like "Kahlan Amnell" or "Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander," but our hero is named "Richard" and his brother "Nathan"). The last third of the book abandons standard fantasy conventions -- exploring sadomasochism, bondage, torture and forced sex when Richard is captured by an evil female magician. This was easily the most interesting section of the book, as it was the most original. The second book, Stone of Tears, is slightly better than the first, as the story becomes a little more grand. There is more submission/enslavement here, when Richard becomes forcibly apprenticed to a different sort of female magician. I started wondering about the author's sexual fantasies at this point, and nothing could take me out of a fantasy world faster than that. After this, the following books start to follow a lackluster, soap-opera formula. Very little seems to actually happen in them to advance a greater plot. They are good enough to read, but easy to put down. Final point: Goodkind is long-winded. His books average over 700 pages and there are a ton of Sword of Truth novels. I think they still may be coming. So know what you are getting into beforehand.
