I found it to be highly overrated. The constant quest for food (that never-ending character nemesis), and the fact that I couldn't stop thinking, "why doesn't he just do the right thing and kill his son?!" made it impossible for me to recognize its alleged "brilliance". Does the fact that he doesn't kill his son make it brilliant? Is it because the novel concerns itself with this bizarre westernized valuation of life, and the preservation of life, despite the most abysmal circumstances, that made people rave? I'm not one to argue based off of what's "logical" from a reasoning standpoint, but nothing made sense to me: I wasn't able to unveil the art behind the piece. Its saving grace is that it was entertaining and it certainly induced visceral responses; that alone made it worth reading. Success of a novel doesn't always follow even if the author entertains the thought of humanity turning on itself in a cannibalistic way. Ultimately, I couldn't grasp at what to take away. I loved the mother character - sanity in a female character (who has little presence physically in the novel, but has an almost constant presence throughout our antagonist's thought-process) is refreshing.

Toni Morrison has a way of creating mood, depth of character, and a solid story in one fantastic package. Each sentence in this book is pure poetry. Her ability to create intense imagery AND craft a strong story makes me want to be a better writer.

I can't believe that this has an average rating over 4. It is supposed to be terribly funny. I didn't find it to be such.

I found his writing quite enjoyable. I usually become quite tired of russian novelist about a 1/3 of any novel in, but this was a great exception.
this is a great book. I mean it has the mysterious theme to it but it is not heavy or anything like twilight. i recomend this to everyone!!! you will understand why once you have read it....because it is awesome!!!!!!!

While Reading: I'm having an extremely difficult time adjusting to this book. I love a great plot, and all of the short stories are forcing me to open up to other styles of literature. So far, I cannot make a connection between any of the stories, except for the ages, hopefully that will develop when I'm further along in the book. However, each short story keeps me attentive. Review: It did indeed get better. My favorite story was clay. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay_(sh... That even lead to further research (see link above). I think reading this book on my kindle was difficult because it was hard to flip back to the name of the short story. The last story kind of confused me, well the whole book does. I just wish there was some connection between the stories.
