Although less well known than The Call of the Wild, I actually enjoyed the thematic reversal of this Jack London classic more.

A work of genius.

Thoughtful and creative. A dark tale told from the perspective of a five year old. I was surprised by the imagination behind it and also surprised that it carried me away.

Impressive mastery of tone. Quietly heartbreaking.

I thought this book was very disappointing. Sometimes I wonder if books on the New York Times Bestseller list are like the movies that win an emmy (or oscar...I cant remember) but then arent very good when you actually rent them. This book wants to show you how you never know how things work out in your life and the people you effect, but it just made me want to read a different book.

I don't read things just for the sake of feeling crazy. That is what this book will do to you. I didn't know much about it, expected science fiction, experienced some amalgam of social commentary, allegory, fantasy, erotica, literary experiment... if you enjoyed Ulysses, Gravity's Rainbow, The Outsiders, any Octavia Butler, House of Leaves, and poetry, you will probably like this. Bizarre!
A brilliant book about the end of the world that prominently features an angel, a fallen angel, the anti-christ, a witch, and an unlucky but likable fellow named Newt. Funny and thoughtful. Easily one of the most enjoyable works of fiction I've ever read. "God moves in extremely mysterious, not to say, circuitous ways. God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, [ie., everybody] to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time."

read for may's book club... liked the story a lot, but felt like the inevitable ending was a little rushed. interesting how times have changed since the story took place.
高中必读。 与圣经人物有一些“松散”的寓言联系的出色幻想。 在我在HS的三年级期间读完这篇文章后,Tolkien迅速成为我最喜欢的作家之一。 推荐读13岁以上的人。
