So I've ended up reading a lot of civil-rights era fiction recently, I'm not sure why...but when I found that this was ANOTHER one (about 2 pages into the book) I inwardly groaned. But guess what - it was great. I liked it a lot. The ending was so...hopeful. There was a lack of horrible things that, while realistic to the era (unfortunately), are not pleasant to read about, and I enjoyed not feeling like I was getting an ulcer from suspense. It was just enjoyable.

It has a few good ideas, but most of it is not applicable to what I want to do for work. The author can be a little annoying, but it's not totally awful.

Solid read, not amazingly original but well written, engaging, with characters I cared about. Can't always say that.

I tried reading this. I really tried. But I just have a hard time reading ANYONE'S book who refers to people as "Orientals"... sheesh, PEOPLE ARE ASIAN. FURNITURE IS ORIENTAL. And the whole conspiracy is just a little too much -- Rhodes scholarships are the preferred method of induction? seriously? I will admit, I did learn some from this book -- how to think more critically about certain political subjects and how to liken today's events more toward scripture. And had some very interesting conversations with my husband who was horrified I had even check it out.

Liked it, but it was depressing.

I read this a long time ago and always remembered it as being a frightening good read in all senses. It no longer held the same appeal. I think this can be a problem when rereading bookings from the past, and in this case about 20 years past. I think that Clive Barker is, however, I master in his field and for anyone starting out on the horror path this is a very good author to read.

Fast paced action about Yakuza and such. Who wouldn't like that? It was hard for me to find time to read. If I had more time I would have enjoyed it more.
Is it sensible to add a book I've read over forty years ago! How can I even admit this? I'm a different person from that person--would I still like it? I'm thinking probably not, but the memory lingers on. Or is it just Clark Gable?

Really great. Not just for cooks by any means.

I was pleasantly surprised how much I like this book. I usually don't rate old classics more than a 4 because it takes so much work to read the old style language (so wordy). This one was amazing! One of my new favorites. I loved Jane... how she was always true to herself and God no matter her trials (yet it shows how hard it was to be so). Great quotes in this book. One of my favorites, said by Helen to Jane, "If all the world hated you, and believed you wicked, while your own conscience approved you, and absolved you from guilt, you would not be without friends."
