Just a genuinely funny book. Nothing great, but not too bad either. The setting of dinner party is quite hilarious and perfectly sets up the Q&A section the book. Answers those questions your always afraid to ask your doctor, just at the title says.

The best Star Trek book I have ever read, period. (and this one was #25). Shatner gets everything right, from the "voices" of the main characters (which, of course, we would expect) even down to the minute details of Star Trek history. If you love the original series, you will find lots of references to those episodes here. Shatner either had the help of a brigade of researchers, did tons of homework himself, or has a photographic memory. Whichever is the case, the plot and pacing of the book keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout and has that wonderful effect that all true book readers love: it "pulls" you through the story. [spoilers ahead] James T. Kirk is now 62 years old and nearing the end of his career in Starfleet. No longer a starship captain, and bored with desk duty, he takes one last opportunity to boldly go...well, you know. Chronologically speaking this is one of the last stories before the events in "Star Trek: Generations" take place. You may first wish to read the novel (or watch the movie)"Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country" as it is somewhat of a prequel, and "Ashes..." repeatedly refers to events in that story. And a note to ST aficionados: if you do not like the "Shatnerverse" or think it apocryphal, skip the three page epilogue.

This book was really exciting!! It's hard for me to review this book because I really really enjoyed it, but its "essence" was extremely unrealistic and in my mind it could never happen in real life, nevertheless it didn't stop it from being thrilling and really great. The DUFF aka. Bianca is a very cynical, unromantic, low self esteemed girl. She gets involved in a totally physical/sexual relationship with Wesley, womanizer, popular guy in school which she completely hates. As the story progresses she realizes how this spoiled guy which she hates and uses to forget her own problems has actually problems of his own, and they are able to create this connection that frightens Bianca, as she is torn between who Wesley truly is. The plot line is really original and I feel everyone has that person that they hate their guts, and the idea of ever crossing that line of love and hate is outrageous but compelling. However, I think the author got a little carried away with the excess dramatic romance which made it unrealistic. I really enjoyed the amount of description in the novel, I thought it was just the right quantity and I could picture every single character in my head. I wasn't so fond of the writing as it was a little to informal and juvenile but it was tolerable. The story conveys a really positive message about self-loving and I thought that was very nice. I don't have a lot to say about this book except that I would recommend it. It is an entertaining read and it gets more meaningful and deeper as you keep on reading. x Aline

Nice lightweight YA read that could crossover to older middle grade readers. Lots of fun for anyone who enjoys Grimm stories or likes NYC fantasy. It's a great romp with likable characters and ideas that really capture th imagination. While the idea of secret troves of magical items guarded by librarians is certainly far from new, this puts a nice spin on it and makes the story fresh and fun. Don't know if Ms. Shulman is aiming to make this more than a one-off story, but there's room for more and I would read more if she does write a sequel.

vacation read #8: not sure what to think about this. I question the historicity. Seems literature and pop fiction has a lot to say about Nazis and the occult, but it appears that most of it is very poorly sourced. This is no exception, although the author does make (sort of) clear that this entire story is just a fiction she made up in her own little mind. Still wish it had more basis in fact. I've only been able to confirm what facts I already knew: Heidegger's existence, and the letters written by prisoner/victims right before they were gassed. The rest of it seems an entirely constructed story.

** spoiler alert ** Macon Leary is a heartbreaking character. Coming from a cold, organised East Coast American family, he doesn't know how to deal with the death of his son, and when his wife leaves him,he's totally lost. He's rescued by Muriel, a warm hearted messy 'Jill of all trades' from the wrong side of the track, who trains his dog, and teaches him how to feel. I loved his portrayal in the film, too, by William Hurt.
