Much better - more coherent, tighter book than the first Robert Hunter novel. The point of view - which was jarring in the first book - is more focused (although still not what I prefer) and even the dialogue was better. That said, Hunter is still the rainmaker - brilliant, practically flawless - which doesn't make him really sympathetic, and he always has an ace up his sleeve, which makes him annoying. If he can get out of any situation, what is there to be afraid of (that second set of handcuff keys made me roll my eyes)? What sold the story for me was the case, or better said, the investigation. I find the nuances of police work very interesting, especially when it's done realistically (that too improved in this book). The murders won't be for the faint of the heart, so be warned. I like when author's next book is better than the last. If Carter keeps that trend, he will have a faithful reader in me. His books won't change the world, but they certainly can change a boring afternoon.

Ah, if you want to be in the Iranian pseudo intellectual crowd, you have to read this and be able to quote from it!

Dense introduction to contemporary Physics, Cosmology and strongest argument ever against Anthropic principle. The last nail on God's coffin. Also presents model dependent reality so well this would probably upset Penrose. I like its blunt, to the point no BS style.

I nearly didn't read this book. The sample failed to interest me. In fact it seemed so over-written and dense that I wasn't sure what the book was about after the better part of the first chapter. However, in-part because the book was Hugo nominated and in-part because it was the io9.com book club read for the month I persevered and bought the book. Rereading the first chapter made a lot more sense the second time around, and almost the very next page after the sample had ended the book came alive. Suddenly it isn't some weird prose about a stork it's a tense week in the lives of a number of characters who all live or work in one small square in Istanbul. Their lives are all changed suddenly when a suicide bomber kills themselves at the end of their street. The book is divided into five days - Monday to Friday - with two chapters for each. However, the story itself jumps between characters with almost total abandon (and certainly no warning) and the characters themselves frequently jump (also without warning) between present day and flash-backs. Basically, you have to pay attention. It's not for reading when you're tired. Having almost given up on it in the first chapter (it's a little over-written in the final few pages as well I thought), I'm glad I persevered as the book was an excellent read for the other 99%. Maybe Ian McDonald just isn't good at beginnings and endings.

I would like to buy and read this book, but I don't know how to put it in my "to-read" shelf! Anyway, I have browsed through it and I give it 3 to 4 stars. :)
This book was just great. I learned so much about the history of Ireland that it made me want to learn even more. If all history was taught like this, maybe kids wouldn't think it so boring.

I like the series, but it is getting more and more repetitious in themes -- and this magnus opus is a little much in the sadism for me. I struggled through it but found it often repulsive in the pain on pain on pain aspect. I guess, for me, there was TMI. I did not keep it.

Another fun mystery in her series! Can't wait to try out a few of these new recipes. Cute book, I enjoyed it more than the last one, key Lime Pie.
I picked up this book as I enjoy Hemingway and thought it would be fun to read a fictional snapshot of his life. It was much more of a love story than I expected (you would think I would have known based on the title). Even though you know they don't end up together forever, it is still a depressing ill-fated love story/relationship surrounded by several other doomed marriages. Hadley is horribly self-conscious about her relationship through the whole story, which gets really old, and it really makes you wonder if there is such a thing as a good, faithful marriage. That being said, it did keep my interest and I kept turning the pages. Definitely not one to buy though; use your public library. :)
