I loved how Cannie really grew in the story, from obsessing over her weight and thinking about whether she made a mistake letting her significant other go, to realizing her body had a purpose, that she was lovely just as she was. She is among the funniest, smartest women I have ever read. Jennifer Weiner knows women!

This was an outstandingly well written memoir by a female horsetrainer turned pilot set mostly in Africa in the 1930s. Since neither of those topics generally interest me, I was first drawn to the book when I read an article citing this as a favorite book of both Diane Sawyer and Hillary Clinton. I'm so glad I read it - the descriptive language is amazing and the story is filled with adventure and courage. Definitely makes one want to continue to search for the passion/adventure in each of our own lives.

Although I didn't feel that this book was quite up to snuff compared to the others in the series, Smith writes his female characters in such a kind and compelling manner, and I love his portrayal of "traditional" Botswana society. Truly a fun series... light reading, but they'll make you think about values and morality (in good ways).

There were aspects of the book that were really good. Danielewski nailed his format and really uses the page in a beautiful way. Also his restraint is great and very admirable. This seems way more like a lost chapter of Ulysses (and probably much like Finnigan's Wake, but I haven't read that so I can't really say for sure.) than House of Leaves did. This also felt less pulpy than House of Leaves, which felt like it belonged more with Palahniuk than Pynchon. Yet it just didn't pack a punch. While his form was great, his content was lacking. I didn't think the story went anywhere (obviously a redundant thing to say, but you know what I mean.) I really wanted to like this book, but it didn't do enough plot-wise. It is worth reading, but don't expect the fascinating aspects of House of Leaves.

I know a lot of people enjoyed this read and I didn't hate it but it didn't work for me. There were so many intresting angles with a large dose of details and the characters drew me in. Unfortunately I felt there was really no follow through on any of the angles. Maybe, they are followed through in the follow up book but I kind of feel like I was built up to a climax and then left there.

This book is meant for Shannon to read: the cultural clash of modern medicine and the Hmong immigrants in the Central Valley of California. Compelling story that has much to teach.

Some people love it, some people don't. I don't. Couldn't even finish it, as a matter of fact. I realized after about 100 pages that if I wasn't laughing now, I wouldn't be further into the story. Had to put it down.
Tarihsel kurguyu seviyorum ve bu bir hayal kırıklığı değildi. Willa'nın ana karakterini tanıdığım gibi hissettim ve sonunda nasıl ortaya çıktığını sevdim.
