The subtitle, "Confessions of a Common Reader," is modest at best. I only wish I were the sort of reader Anne Fadiman is. She consumes every book that comes her way, from large volumes of classic literature down to the owner's manual for her car. Her vocabulary is extensive; as a sort of strange game, I dug out my highlighter with the small post-it flags, and flagged every instance where I had to retrieve a dictionary. I ran out of flags, but visited the dictionary no less than 32 times in the reading of this book, which may say more about the size of my vocabulary than it does hers. I enjoyed finding another life so shaped by words and books, so in love with the physicality of books as well as their content.

Literatura fantástica de calidad, bien organizada y narrada. Elementos mágicos inolvidables, basados en la fuerza de las palabras. Muy recomendable.

This book felt forced the whole way through. It made me believe that someone was forcing him to write a "Palahniuk" book and he just wasn't prepared for it.

I read this at my Grandma's house when I go there for the holidays. She has a Christmas book collection that she puts out & I love this book. It is hilarious & heart warming.
A good collection of shorts most of which I havent read before. Included were some stories involving Rick and the ones I wanted to read the most - the ones about Cormac. A fun read and you can see how her writing style has matured with the stories.

An absorbing page turner! A "wolf man" is caught by trappers and taken to a psychiatric hospital. He is examined, prodded and questioned. Orders are written to send him to another psychiatric facility to be locked up the rest of his life. The doctor's wife, Robin, daringly smuggles the "wolf man" out of the hospital and takes him home with her. What follows changes the community and Robin's life. Wonderful story. From the back cover: "He was beautiful. He was innocent. And in the locked room where the psychiatrists kept him, he was treated more like an animal than a human being. Robin Moore, coping with a divorce in progress and a troubled teenaged son, surprised even herself when she impusively rescued this man, who'd been raised in the wilderness and had no more sophistication than a child. She spirited him home to her suburban town, where she could keep him safe. But with the strange, uncivilized man's arrival came a streak of wild, uncontrollable events that disturbed the peace in this perfectly ordered neighbourhood - and changed all of Robin's ideas about love and humanity..."

This was great. A great 'meta-spy' story. Even though it was written in '79 I think much of it is applicable to today. Read it on the Kindle... glad I did as I ended up having to look up more words than in anything else I've read. I'm kinda keen to read more Trevanian now..but I think I'll read something easier to take a break first!
