It was ok. I thought it was a depressing read, though, because of the character's sad story.. I was waiting for the character's life to get better but...the end just kind of dropped off and was a real let-down. I think if there was a sequel, it could definately be saved, in my opinion.

I didn't realize this was a prequel to "Gardenias" until I was a few chapters into it and the characters seemed familiar. Again, Sullivan's strong women and storytelling style from a child's point of view appeal to me very much!

Mrs Kleypas discovered a fool proof formula and now uses it in every book: He is tall, dark, strong, and brooding with a difficult childhood, aversion to marriage and tons of sexual experience. She is beautiful, delicate, sensitive and different than other women and of course she never has any sexual experience whatsoever. The two usually have some animosity between them and their pairing always seems unlikely. Half of the story is spent on the two getting together and then, when they finally do, there is some misfortune that happens, always something external, for which the characters have no control over (disease, fire, kidnapping, abduction, someone is being shot, etc). One of the characters saves the other through the sheer force of love and there is a happily ever after and usually a baby. Now, the funny part is that even though I see that there is this formula, I still enjoy those books tremendously. I like the characters, they feel genium and alive. I care about them and about what happens to them. In every book, even though I know that there will be a happy ending, I am still so curious to see how the unlikely couple will get together. Those books (I am talking about the Wallflowers and the Hathaway series) are like a box of chocolates without the guilty feelings. Now I have to say that I found the characters of this particular book to be a little two-dimensional and less believable than in the other ones. I liked Harry but his transformation was too sudden, too fast and not very believable. I still enjoyed it though :)

I read this one a while back but the review did not get entered. I am definitely a novice when it comes to how to do this goodreads thing. Anyhow, I did enjoy this book. I found the history to be fascinating and the characters engaging. I particularly liked Laurence Luther and the side story of baseball. The police strike in Boston and the subplots of the principal characters made for a good read.
