Herman and Chomsky make a very compelling case for the structural model of Mass Media. Its the best explanatory framework I have come across yet of why the Media behaves as it does.

Quick read. Nice story about friendship.

We read Cheever not because we love stories about the suburbs, but because Cheever shows us that a wild imagination can’t be bound even by the suburbs. We enjoy the quality of observation, the dialogue, the air-tight construction (and what he teaches us about form both in every example and over the course of the collection), but we read him for those moments when his stories take wing to escape cliche, banality, and the mundane. A few more thoughts on Cheever: http://alisonkinney.com/2014/07/01/jo... Thanks!

Getting a little fed up with Bella. This one was a little racier, I'm censoring some of it for my 10 year old. I just don't get the "afraid to get married but not afraid to be a vampire" thing.

As with many series, the beginning books are the best. I would still reccomend "Specials" because I feel like you can't start a series and not finish it, but the main characters definitely started to get on my nerves.

This book was eye opening. A reminder to pray for Christians in other countries who are literally dying because of their belief in Christ... At church, as a side note, our pastor said he is thankful for our freedom to meet and worship God in America. He also added, that he wondered whether or not that was beneficial to us. That struck a cord-- while reading this book and thinking about the faith of the Chinese Christians, and the complecency of American Christians. I think those book provides much food for thought--and I need to do a lot more digesting. To start...I am thankful for God's Word that I have access to whenever I desire, and would like to be more faithful in hiding God's Word in my heart, and in facilitating the same with my kids.

A good book. Shades of Rabbit, Run. Compared to Yates's Revolutionary Road. It took me a little while to get into it, but Ford is an exceptional writer. A taste: And then we were up and out and down and into the dashing wet wind of Detroit, and the squabbly street where our suitcases sit in a sop of old melted snow like cast-off smudges. Forgive me (and Ford). I'm a sucker for alliteration. Frank Bascombe, a divorcee nearing middle age and still mourning the loss of his son, is The Sportswriter. He has given up writing novels and is happily writing about sports and discovering (or really searching out) the mysteries of life. Frank says: In my view all teachers should be required to stop teaching at age thirty-two and not allowed to resume until they're sixty-five, so that they can live their lives... live lives full of ambiguity and transience and regret and wonder, be asked to explain nothing in public until very near the end when they can't do anything else.... Explaining is where we all get into trouble.

I loved this book. I don't think I'll ever forget how I felt suffocated too in Zola's description of the flooding mine. Good book: love, death, family bitterness, poor, rich, political action, ignorance, mistakes -- the works.
