read it in English class and once I got used to the story it got really interesting. Love, wealth and drama on the US East Coast...

Well, true to Bolano there was a lot of despair. And it was quite trippy in some parts. His treatment of the mundane makes everything seem surreal.

I really thought this was a good way to end the series, because finally we find out who killed Ally. I'm reading the next one now, and I'll probably try to finish the series when Shepard stops writing them. My only qualms with this series, is that I think it's just getting stretched out too long, but i guess fans wanted to keep reading about these girls.

My recommendation is to read chapter 61 and then the rest of the text. The Unwinding was so horrifying to read about and the clinical and casual way that a person is unwounded took my breath away. I am glad I read it!

This is easily one of the most heart wrenching books that I've read in a while. Like Looking for Alaska, each chapter begins with a backward countdown to a day a few weeks in the future where one of the three main characters—a mentally ill 19-year-old Iraq war veteran—is attacked by a lynch mob. Pretty intense. The story is told from the perspective of three different characters: war vet Jimmy, a deaf teenager Mik who has bum hearing aids and essentially hasn't talked in about a decade because she's so self-conscious, and 16 year-old a recent African refugee Fatima who lives on her own and sells newspapers. The action all takes place in their neighborhood in New York as the three strike up an unusual friendship. This book tackles an impressive number of important issues given that it's less than 200 pages long: war veterans returning with mental problems, what it's like to be a deaf teenager, immigration issues and fear of deportation, etc. This really is a great read. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone of any age.
