So freaking good. First grown up novel I ever read.

This is why I am sometimes loathe to re-read books. I had read this book in June 2006 and adored it. I knew nothing of the Howard's End premise (bad English major!) - I just thought it was fun reading. I re-read it for a current book club, and my impression was "meh." Too much swearing, too much needless description without function (do ALL novelists feel the need to include so much superfluous description? It is HIGHLY ANNOYING! Just like when people write in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS). The characters seemed like shells of real people propped up to convey some philosphical idea, to my dismay as a reader. I like characters to be real people, not ideas with clothing and a voice. Also, too much swearing. The only thing I really enjoyed on the second read was the astute portrayal of campus politics.

I like this lady, but the book was a bit of a dry read. I made it through - she had some valuable things to say - but somehow the tone just wasn't as engaging as I'd hoped. She's an inspiration - still gardening in her 80s!

I LOVED how Rowling ended the series. This may quite possibly be my favorite in the series. I won't give anything away because I'm not a jerkface like that, but suffice it to say that the pace was different, the characters really developed, and all the important loose ends were tied up.

Loved it so much as a kid.

Primarily it was my fault as I picked this book up around the last six weeks of seventh grade and failed to pick it up and read it. The first novel was interesting enough, but as the series goes on, it becomes like another Harry Potter - too many books, not enough plot and ideas to back it up. So, I returned it and hope to never pick it up again.

Sort of a mashup of a Matt Scudder mystery and Supernatural. I'd enjoyed the short-run series a few years back but had never read the books. Now I'm devouring them.

Riveting -- business does its (unethical) thing with the (hypocritical) complicity of government.

This was a beautiful book. I really liked how it portrayed many people's different personalities and how they could come together in a hostage type situation. I also enjoyed reading about the struggles of a forced social situation and the reality of trying to combine different cultures and personalities in to an endurable situation. Unfortunately, I did like how the author does prepare you for the endng, which wasn't the ending I would have written, but it was still poignant. Although, the last chapter I did not predict and was surprised at the ending of the last chapter. After reading this book...I wanted to start learning a bunch of different languages. Nobody shoots the translator!
