I have been avoiding this book for years, because I generally avoid historical fiction, and only read it if I'm forced to. Well, it came up on a class reading list, so I sat down to read just one chapter, and proceeded to consume the book in one gulp. This book is good, really good. It's a story about family hijinks, shenanigans (my favorite word!) and the 1963 Birmingham Church bombing. My heartstrings were yanked, I learned about history, and now, I want to read all of Christopher Paul Curtis' work.

Fantastic book that complements other hand to hand styles well. It's definitely interesting to consider the evolution of hand to hand combat in Western Civilization.

Very interesting book about the history of the chocolate industry and the Cadbury family in particular. You probably know that Cadbury is an old British chocolate company. The company started in the Victorian era when conditions for the working class were terrible and food products were adulterated in all imaginable ways. Chocolate was served as a drink that was bitter and fatty. The story is about fierce market competition and the technological innovations that occurred to make chocolate the product we know today. It's also about the values of the Cadbury family that caused them to fight for the rights of working to make a living wage.

It is an amazing book though not sure I could say I loved it as it is very depressing. The descriptions are wonderful and the way the four lives intertwine, linking to other lives, is fascinating. You can feel yourself in India. But it's not a happy book and the very thing that makes it amazing also makes it very hard to read.

I really did not like this book. Some of the stories were ok but then when i found out they were not real it annoyed me. It just didn't appeal to me!

Sarcastic, sarcastic, crass, clever, and sarcastic. Often more "The Colbert Report" (not my fav) than "The Daily Show" (my fav), I was glad it was short but still found myself skipping. I must say they have some very witty writers but still used too much exageration for my taste. Don't listen with kids in the car, btw.

book is a bit short and incomprehensive, however serves as a great bibliography and beginner's lesson to understanding why playing God with food without fully researching the ramifications could be more harm than good

Just folded this one up and I can't describe exactly why I enjoyed it so much. I picked it up because Masterpiece Theatre this month is playing the screen version. We really didn't enjoy it much. I didn't think much of the character and found him arrogant and immature. I was slowly slogging along with the book version when I found that I was thinking about the book when I wasn't reading it. What intrigues me is that this book is one long journal, but it is fiction. However, it reads so realistically, I have to remind myself that it is fiction. Yes, the character in his youth is arrogant and hard to stand, but he is written that way. The writing is so masterful in voice that I was fascinated. The book traces his life. He is constantly running into famous writers and artists of the 20th century. This was such a fun element to include in the writing. Of course it also made it a little less believable. But I loved running into Hemingway, Picasso and a bunch of other artists and writers I've only heard little bits about. I loved the finesse of the final chapters too. Summer in France. Beautiful.
