Stupid/irritating behaviour from Violet. No Jay (almost). Love triangle. Way too much Rafe. Argh! I still enjoyed the body-hunting/creepy serial killer bits, but I hope the next one cuts down on the annoying teenage behaviour - it's getting hard to ignore.

BILINGUAL REVIEW! (and you say I never do anything for you...) You won't get more than the most essential basics about hoof-care from this book, but for the low price I guess it's okay. Most of the author's statements are too general, of course. If I learned anything from having dealt with horses for more then 20 years, it's that every horse is different and that sometimes you just have to try in order to find what's right for you and your horse. Especially where hoofs are concerned. Other statements presented as truths are actually quite controversial, like the existence of the mystical "glaze coat". That said, I'd recommend this for people who know next to nothing about horses and their hoofs and aren't forced to learn more. If your horse has any difficulties with its hoofs, you'll want to go look at something more substantial (and I'll tell you what, as soon as I've found it.)

JA's latest and best book, which could spawn a sequel (he said hopefully, even though I have heard he is writing something along the lines of themed western) or two. The book centres on three days of battle around a hill, involving Black Dow, the ultimate hired killer, Bremer dan Gorst, in disgrace and trying to redeem his honour, and Prince Calder, who will do anything to enhance his hold on power. Nobody wants to die, expecially in somewhere totally unimportant, but the ways that the characters face death is as varied as their backgrounds. In one astonishing sequence an engagement is described from the point of view of ewach of the characters involved and makes for a stunning piece of writing.

people always ask me what I do. they should read this book. its interesting and goes beyond just the advertising world. 4 or 5 case studies including the planning behind the got milk campaign. Jon Steel's a bad ass.

In decades and centuries to come, Karl Rove's name will replace Rasputin or Cardinal Richelieu's as the synonym for "power behind the throne". This book, co-written by two Texas journalists, provides a look at Rove's rise to power and the ways in which Karl Rove has helped to create one of the strongest and least accountable executive branches in United States history. In 2007, it's somewhat dated, given that it was written before most of the events in Iraq, before the re-election campaign of 2004, before Plamegate. Still, it's eerily prescient in some parts, and an interesting study on the compulsion to amass and exercise power. Worth a read for political junkies or people interested in the machinations of government.

It's a definite favorite but the movie could have been much better

Unlike Stargirl, which is an A+ piece of YA literature, this sequel is B+ work at best. Like its predecessor, it is filled with quirky characters and tributes to non-conformity, but it ultimately fails as a sequel because a.) it isn't true to the character of Stargirl and b.) the reader doesn't come away knowing any more about the fates of Stargirl and Leo than they do at the end of the first book. An epilogue would have been worth half a letter grade, at least. (Also, did anyone else find that the little interaction Stargirl and Leo do have in this book contradicts the conclusion of the previous book?)

The grunge fiction Gen X writers got so hung up about did get a little stale after a while. However, if there was ever a seminal piece of Australian grunge fiction, this would be my pick. This book should hit a few nerves for anyone who has lived through a time of crummy share housing, excess cask wine and flaky relationships. For me, it's the dark counterpart to 'He Died With a Falafel in His Hand' and just as good.
