This is a very interesting book. I found it fascinating because I live in the DFW area and it's rather strange to see "ourselves" portrayed in a book. The author is a transplanted Oklahoman that now lives in Washington so the smug superiority attitude he exhibits gets a little old. Oklahoma is just a stone's throw from Texas so I don't get the idea that we are somehow unique for overdoing the Christmas spending and decorating everything that doesn't move in the name of religion. Texas is certainly not the only state to continue throwing up one big box store after another either. Don't read this expecting a nice little sweet Christmas story with a moral. This guy is pretty much devoid of a single shred of sentiment but he is an engaging writer and reveals some things I have not heard before. I just wonder how "betrayed " some of those families that took him into their homes and hearts felt after they read the final version of the book. Surely, this is not what they expected?

Good grief! I've listened to two disc and just can't continue. The author is reading the book and sounds like she is about to burst into tears the ENTIRE time. Really? Is the book that sad and depressing? I couldn't take it! The story was intriguing, but I'm not sure I can shake her voice out of my head to finish reading it. It just reinforces my opinion that you should steer clear of audiobooks read by the author.

A somewhat hit-or-miss collection of Continental Op stories. The last two being the eponymous and "$106,000 Blood Money" work well as a two-part tale. Some others are a bit more flat. It includes the unfinished novel "Tulip", which showed Hammett moving in a different direction toward the end of his life and career. I wouldn't recommend it as an introduction to Hammett but neither would I say it's only for a completist.

Simply put don't go to war unless you mean to prevail. If you engage you must be prepared to do all what is necessary to win. the book may be applicable to daily life and business .. A must read for our politicians!

A gripping, true story. I had a hard time liking the main characters and struggled with their attitude of moral superiority over their respective families, colleagues, and peer group. Another topic that made an impression was how vicious gossip and the court of public opinion (particularly for celebrities) can be so destructive.

The contributors ranged from young to old, mothers to daughters to sisters. I especially appreciated those who had a terrible or disappointing "first period" experience with their parents and vowed to change that with their own daughters. I really enjoyed the older stories where "belted" pads were still in vogue - I had never heard of those before (and sadly, I have not read Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret). Or that French women cannot make good mayonnaise while they have their periods. I really loved Gloria Steinem's essay "If Men Could Menstruate" - the updated version in my little red book truly kicked ass! And I swear this entire book was chock full of really awesome quotables :) Complete review on my blog
