** spoiler alert ** The first time I read ACO, back in high school, I struggled for the first third (just about wore myself out flipping back and forth between the text and glossery), but the it clicked and I just sank into the language. That's still the main pleasure here - I mean, the story is well worth it, but Alex's rolling nadsat places a layer of beauty over the rape and ultraviolence. Without that, Burgess would have had a hell of a time getting any sympathy for his hooligans. I could sit and discuss ACO for hours, but I also feel like pretty much everything's been said. Which is more desirable - the evil of the individual or the control of the state? I imagine your opinion depends on whether you're putting in the boot or catching it in the yarbles. As a side note, some of the my favorite oi songs reference ACO, but I suspect that lingering association has more to do with the Kubrick vision than simply the novel. final thought: You don't have to love it, but it probably ought to read it. epicdystopia.blogspot.com

3.5 stars... I think was one of her earlier books. The writing style is still very good and I didn't really feel the need to skim. The plot is great in this book. Some of the lines are cheesy, but overall still a good read.

Crappy. Seriously, this came highly recommended, but I was totally unimpressed. At the same time as he pushes the obvious (don't tell your son to "act like a man" when he cries, take his feelings seriously, &etc.) the author is also doing whole chapters on the special (and different!) relationships between mothers and sons and fathers and sons. In other words, there's no attempt to repudiate the gender divide, only to ameliorate its negative effects on boys. He's perpetuating the mother/father gendered responsibility and affect split even as he bemoans the trials young boys go through in a gendered world. I stopped reading about 2/3 of the way through because I was too irritated to continue.

I really wanted to read this because it is a classic, and quotes all the time. But besides the opening line, I found it boring, I could not get into it, and did not finish it. I'm sure it is great, I just could not get into it.

This book was a phenomenal piece of historical fiction that really made history come alive. The story begins when Kleopatra Selene and Alexander are taken from Egypt after Egypt has been conquered and their mother has committed suicide. They are taken to Rome along with their younger brother who never actually makes it their, dying on the boat trip. Selene and Alexander are sent to live with the sister of Caesar Octavian and are treated as part of the ruling family for years but the thought always comes to them: will we ever get out of Rome? will we ever return to Egypt? what will happen to us when we get older and are more of a threat?

** spoiler alert ** As I started reading this novel, I ran across notes I had made no telling how long ago, indicating I had read it once before. Even now, having finished the book for the second time, I have no memory of an earlier reading--and I'm not surprised. Said to be laugh-out-loud funny, the book is an account of a series of momentous events in the life of an adolescent girl, then adult, events that clearly scar her into becoming an addict of various stripes. Yet every event is described with a complete lack of affect, which makes for an odd effect on the reader. Perhaps we are meant to read into the events, supplying the feelings that the author herself withholds. If so, in my estimation the author fails here, because instead of feeling sympathy for the main character, I feel practically nothing at all. No wonder I can't remember this book.
