thanks for the recommendation, carolyn! this was a good book, and I could relate to the character, feeling what he was feeling and understanding the feelings, even though I'm not an alcoholic. Its really funny at times and powerful at others.

What a disgustingly messed up life. I almost felt like puking as I read about some of the things Burroughs had to experience. He writes graphically about the squalor of his mother's psychiatrist's house (with the dog pooping on the floor and the roof caving in) as well as sex. Nothing/ nobody is pretty or loving in this book. I continued reading because, frankly speaking, I couldn't quite look away from the car crash of their various existences. Then I read that the psychiatrist's family had sued Burroughs after the book was published!
Cute illustrations highlight this book that embraces the importance of getting your pup from the pound.

This was a difficult book to rate. This is certainly unlike any other book I've read (and I've read a few other of Steinbeck's shorter stories). At first glance, this is an extremely depressing book (not unlike other Steinbeck works), but upon further reflection I don't believe that's what Steinbeck wanted the reader to glean from his Great Depression story. Time and time again there are fantastic examples of human dignity and charity toward their fellow man despite the extreme challenges that are thrown their way in order to survive and remain family. And that family does not necessarily include kin. Probably my favorite passage in this book involves Ma explaining that anyone who is in need becomes their family, and that it seemed the poorer they got, the more they had to do and give. All of this culminates to an ending that some would find creepy -- which, granted, it is-- but it also provides a capstone to the theme of all past experiences. Charity and survival was not in the tangible items that were provided, but caring enough for another human soul to give of one's self.

1968 was a very tumultuous year, and one that really did "rock the world." (It's also the year in which I was born, so it fascinates me.) Mark Kurlansky takes a year filled with activity and turmoil, and sets it out very readably in this book. As good history books do, it makes the subject come alive.
