I was obsessed with Roald Dahl as a kid. His books were the perfect combo of silliness and darkness (and the perfect primer for the Coen brothers' movies.) I had hoped to relive that fine balance in this adult book, but was a little disappointed. I enjoyed the first half of the book immensely but probably from the pure novelty of the enterprise. A raunchy silly, sexipade from Mr.Dahl? How wrong! But about half way through, the novelty wore off and the plot couldn't sustain itself. The story became repetitive and the jokes did to. (There's only so many jokes you can tell about sperm!) I got bored and was sad that he couldn't maintain the suspense he's so skilled at in his kids books and short stories.

I was a bit surprised by this book. If I had thought it through, I would have known that this volume was an environmental treatise hidden behind its alternative history premise. At times, the environmental message overwhelms the alt history. The writing style also has an annoying habit of jumping topics seemingly at random, giving a feeling of talking with a n expert who is overly fond of non-sequiturs. That said, I really enjoyed the book and learned a wealth of new conversation starters, both amazing and disturbing.

I'm starting an anarchist space colony.
The h is 25 years old, divorced, gorgeous and a housekeeper. She's determined to stay single or at least not to be taken over by an overpowering, masterful male. She had a disastrous first marriage, which she was basucally forced into by family circumstances. Her husband was abusive and sadistic. The h's new temporary job is to be housekeeper for a month on a beautiful tropical Island. Her boss she believes is a married man with a child. She was hired by an agency and he thinks he's getting a middle aged married woman. They were both unpleasantly shocked when he went to pick her up at the airport. He's single, and the child is his much younger half sister. They immediately strike sparks and if there had been a flight back to the mainland that day the h would have probably left. This book is not for anyone who dislikes bickering, bantering, or smart mouthed females who use a sharp tongue to keep men away. I like this kind of h so liked the book alot. The h has a lot of baggage and despite the H's arrogance and occassional impatience and bad temper, he shows alot of patience in dealing with and overcoming the h's barriers. Obviously everything concludes with a HEA.

And this one could be called "Kirsten Makes More Bad Choices and Her Entire Family Suffers for Them". In addition to containing very God-in-the-Machine plot devises, I find it odd that this is the first and only time readers see Kirsten have a conversation with her older brother, Lars. Strange.
