this book wasn't as good as the first i didn't really like jacob and he was in it to long also the cullans were out of it way to long BUT you need to read this one to understand the awesome series

3.5 stars. I deeply enjoyed this space opera novel with a romance novel tucked into it. The world building, characterization, and slight politicking all came together like a good space opera. And goodness knows I adore space opera. The romance was a little difficult at first. The start of it might have worked better without overtly trying to sell it. (e.g., Do we really need the "he's so sexy" moment while the hero and heroine are bonding moment over her PTSD and he comforts her through it?) But while laying it on lighter at the start would've felt more believable to me, the romance rocked by the end. This novel starts out a bit reminiscent of Bujold's Cordelia's Honor, but quickly takes on a life of its own. Yay!

As a perpetually single person, I greatly appreciate books that take friendships as seriously as romantic relationships. As the main character states, friendships are a lot like relationships. At times you will sleep next to that person, you will feel hope and loss with that person, you will eat hundreds of dinners with that person, and you feel a sense of responsibility to that person. From beginning to end, this was another one of those books that speaks truths about life in a way that wraps it all up. There were a lot of "Ah ha! THAT'S the meaning of life!" moments. My favorite philosophical statements dealt with the themes of relationships over time. Does everything run on a loop? Is the beginning as important as the end? Are you the same person if that friend is no longer in your life? Do you exist as a separate entity, or as the sum of the parts of your life and your relationships with others? Favorite Quotes: "A person is not a suitcase, with a finite number of items to unpack. A person is a world. Look at any photograph - of a stranger, your father, your best friend. Sometimes the mystery is all you can see." "You know...a happy ending isn't really the end. It's just the place where you choose to stop telling the story." "All at once it strikes me that as well as I know Sonia, I know only one version of her - that all you know of a life are the places where it touches your own. Under the fluorescent lights of the waiting room I'm catching a glimpse of the places where I don't exist. It's strange and diminishing, like looking through a telescope at the stars." "Once you know the end of the story, every part of the story contains that end, and is only a way of reaching it."

great book with great drawings--a for-real architect's book for architects. a collection of residential projects with Olsen Sundberg. if you like that northwest aesthetic of material honesty of cast-in-place concrete, cor-ten steel, oversized industrial apperatures, folded steel plates, counter-balance, etc. this is the book for you. all the usual suspects pitch in essays: steven holl, rick joy, billie tsien...for once, eye candy with substance.

I had this book sitting on my self for as long as I can remember, then after I finished "Speak" I finally started reading. It's great!!!!!! You totally have to read it.(Just as a warning it is really sad at some points, in my opinion of course.)

The final book in the Millennium trilogy, Luftslottet som sprängdes is not as action packed as its predecessors, but for readers who like courtroom dramas and government conspiracies it's an enjoyable read. I definitely liked it better than the second book. I don't have much to add, review wise, to what I said about Flickan som lekte med elden, other than to say that with every chapter, I grew more dubious and amazed at the power Stieg Larsson's blatant self insertion wielded over the female characters; Larsson spends the entire trilogy lifting the female sex up onto a pedestal, hammering into the reader's head how utterly unappreciated and underestimated modern women are, only to have every single female character that runs into Mikael Blomkvist fall head over heels in love with him. It's just weird. And kind of reeks of hypocrisy. I don't like it.
