This is the first Michael Connelly I've read; I was attracted to it having seen The Lincoln Lawyer movie a few months ago. He writes beautifully with the plot layering and the complexity of his sentences pitched somewhere between Grisham and the wonderful Scott Turow. Good little twist at the end mostly redeeming what I thought was a bit of a story anti-climax - which is why I've deducted a star. Will certainly read more by Michael Connelly.

Perhaps my favorite from Kerouac.

Even if you don't like baseball, this is a wonderfully written biography on Sandy Koufax. Reads like you are listening to someone that was there in the dugout. Fun illustrations add to the story.

I loved Damnation Alley, and was almost physically sick when I saw how craptacular the movie was in comparison. This is a solid action-adventure story, with Hell Tanner's development from degenerate to hero thrown in.

No wonder that the Chinese are fucking the whole world over. Only weasel-like deep-thinking MFers such as these can manipulate, cheat, and penetrate (pun-intended) not only their own (well deserving) population, but the entire planet Earth. My father (RIP) used to tell me to beware of the Chinese, because they are the worst kind of conquerors and woo be upon you when (not if) one day they decide to move from their land to your country to stay. Been to San Francisco lately? :-)

Two neat little stories - the first Bond short stories I have read, and rather good too. Unusual missions in both stories ("The Living Daylights" and "From a View to a Kill") with a focus on waiting, watching, and drinking until the enemy shows his hand. Fleming's Bond is particularly snobbish and dismissive here, as he muses on life, nature, the awfulness of Berlin, the awfulness of Paris, how disappointing French women are, the time that he lost his virginity and his note-case simultaneously... and then the brief and brutal moments of action (along with, spoiler alert, an act of restraint bordering on mercy). An enjoyable quick read.

As one of my most beloved professors, I was anxious to see Jon Dee's words of wisdom in action. How do we define ourselves? What is individuality and how is individuality reflected in our commercial culture? These are some of the underlying questions of Palladio, a tightly woven novel that explores the dissolution of the nuclear family, the convergence of sex-violence-advertising-exploitation-meaninglessness, and what it is to be an American in the 21st Century. I was impressed with Dee's balancing of several suspenseful plots, all of which subtly presented a far deeper meaning than their face values first suggested. In trying to understand the motivation of Dee's many flawed characters, I found myself asking larger questions. What leads someone to seek solace in anonymous sex? Is that character's psychology representative of a growing minority (majority?) of America? My one disappointment was with Dee's ending. I'm all for E.L. Doctorow. I enjoy my fair share of cryptic prose. But why choose to end this otherwise brilliant novel with pieces of meaningless commercials? Okay, actually, I can answer that last question. I get it. But for entertainment's sake, and as a reader, the unresolved ending was a big disappointment.
AMAZING book! As always, Jane Austen proves to be one of the best authors ever.
