When you read this book, it's impossible to believe that Julia Cameron has accomplished what she has considering the things she's gone through. She certainly has had an up and down life, some of the downs seem to be of her own doing. It was fascinating though and worth the time.

** spoiler alert ** Well, it just so happened that when I was reading this, I was in Stratford Ontario to see the Grapes of Wrath play. In one word, it was...profound. I wanted to cry half the time. I was about halfway through the book when I saw it, so I didn't know how it was going to end, but it was interesting seeing the characters come to life on stage. It made it so powerful, the ending extremely so. I thought this book was just going to end on a negative note, in a scene where only one family member was left and all the rest were dead or something, (which isn't altogether wrong,) but the ending with Rosasharn was rather unexpected; erie, I should say. Not quite hopeful, but not a simple ending where the characters just give up. I suppose, thinking it over as I'm typing here, that last scene with Rosasharn -who'd been something of a Debbie-downer for the whole last half of the book, and for good reason - was a sign that even she had not quite given up on life, that she had to get herself, and others to pull through and survive. It's a major change in her character, right at the end of the story, and even though the life ahead of her and her family is going to be tough even after I reach the end of the last paragraph on the book, I know that she is going to fight to survive, that they all will. I just really like the ending, as you can tell, but the whole book and play I just have to give five stars. Not many book sweep me off my feet like this one does.

Perfectly crafted, with memorable characters (although I would not say that the putative protagonists are the most interesting--I'd really love to know Tsukiko's backstory), strange and fascinating scenes and wonders, and several intertwined mysteries. The deliberate interlocking of different timestreams was confusing, but effective.

Very cool book about the early days of crab fishing. the writing isn't perfect but it gets the job done and the story is interesting.
A great collection.

Don't know if I can recommend this to anyone as I feel like you either like Chuck Palahniuk or you don't. This is his 4th book I have read and I haven't yet gotten tired of his distinct writing style. I thought it was great but I think this is an incredibly subjective writer and definitely not loved by everyone.
