Carrie Ryan has written a nice companion to her first story The Forest of Hands and Teeth. I again found myself struggling, like I did with the first book, with the first half of this story. Carrie writes a beautiful world but it is slow and meandering and full of the main charters self-reflection that quickly begins to get tedious and heavy. But this does change around the halfway point, again just like in the first book, when the characters finally begin to act and not just think. Plus Carrie adds a truly inspired new twist to the story that adds a whole other level to the story and characters. Though this series is set in a post-apocalyptic world full of zombies "mudos" "unconsecrated," they are not the focus. I feel like they mostly show up only to add some much needed action to a story that focuses mostly on the angst of our teenage heroine. This is a good book and I look forward to reading the next installment The Dark and Hollow Places, though I am not in such a hurry because it is not the next book on my list of to reads.

This is almost a 5-star book -- I gave it only 4 because some of the diary entries from Revolutionary Paris did drag a bit. The author kept me guessing (and fooled me entirely) on some plot points. A great read overall.
This book contains the best descriptions I have ever read. Steinbeck painted beautiful pictures in my mind!

I've actually traded this book in without finishing it. I'll keep what review I had read up, though.... I've been reading this book, the first of a series, for a while and, well, we just haven't hit it off. Usually, I'm really interested in post-Apocalyptic, sociological books - The Stand and The Postman are both favorites. The books in the Dresden Files are ones that I can't put down, but Dies the Fire is one of those that it's hard to pick back up. (I've been taking it with me to doctor appointments and when I'm somewhere waiting for something.) I don't know what it is about the book that just hasn't caught my interest. It doesn't suffer from having too many groups of characters to follow (The Stand certainly had this problem). The best guess I have right now is that there just isn't that much conflict. I'm half-way through right now and, while some inter-group conflicts have been happening, the characters seem to luck out and find people who know how to make bows from raw, natural materials, know how to swordfight, can make armor, etc. The one main character, Juniper, is a Wiccan, which I don't have a problem with. However, she's constantly praising the Lord and Lady, making religious symbols in the air, etc., like a Wiccan version of a devout Catholic. It's a little annoying (and it would have been just as annoying if the character was Christian). I won't be buying the other books in the series, unless something really outstanding happens in the remaining 280 pages....

Superb! Loved this book so much, I was upset when I finished reading it. Ran out to buy other books by McCourt, as well as memoirs by his brother. The author's wry sense of humor takes the reader through his impoverished Irish childhood with poignancy, humor and warmth. Read it years ago, and must re read it!

An extensive sociological study of class and its impact on children. Implication is that parents sense of their child's opportunity frames how they raise children. Middle class/professional class children are more likely to be raised using techniques that enchance their ability to compete in the economy in contrast to their working and poverty class classmates. Raises many issues that have yet to be grappled with by public officials.
A book to read to get your mind off things. It's stupidly funny..but you still go on reading coz it gets interesting each chapter!

This is one of my favourite books for these two reasons, "Love as thou wilt" and "That which yields is not always weak." This book (and the books that follow) is an incredibly detailed, involved, beautiful story and I can't really do it any justice. The plot is intricate, the characters are vivid and Carey rarely leaves you a moment where you're not anticipating... something. That said, it is graphic (to an extent. It's not quite romance novel graphic, but it's close) and it depicts violent acts of a sexual nature. But even if S&M's not your cup of tea, it's also not the primary focus of the book and it also doesn't take away from the story. Each act and scene (sexual and otherwise) is not gratuitous. They serve as a way to demonstrate character development and move the plot along at a vigorous breath-taking pace. I highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of fantasy sans the magic and dragons. I'd put this more on par with alt-history and the perspective has an almost Victorian narration to it. Still, it's an amazing read and is at least worth a visit if you're looking for something new.

I had fun reading this book about a home-schooled girl and the turn her journey takes when she discovers that her mother has cancer. A real world dilemma portrayed well. I did find Ida B to be a little irritating and I did not like the whole villanizing of schools thing, but it was enjoyable.
This book was alright. Had I read it prior to "Joy Luck Club", I would have liked it better. I am facinated with asian culture, and in that aspect, it was descriptive and illuminating. Amy Tan is a wonderful writer. I love her detail and descriptions. The story is good, just not "Joy Luck Club" good.
