I do not think this was a great introduction to Delany. Reputedly one of the greats of the genre and I've only now gotten around to trying one of his works. This is one of those far future/post apocalyptic SF stories where knowledge and understanding has declined leaving the populace in a faux medieval condition. Relics of their technological past linger but are indistinguishable from magical artefacts as far as most of the populace are concerned. There was also quite an emphasis on the philosophical musings of the main characters that is, I guess, indicative of the time in which this novel emerged (late 60's) but for me this came across as largely superfluous to the story, nor did it particularly help develop the characters, or even interest me in its own right. But when you take that out, there's not much left underneath. Just a meandering, baffling adventure story with thin characters traversing and admittedly striking landscape. I won't let this put me off reading more Delany but I will definitely wait until I find one of his more highly recommended novels.

I very much enjoyed this book. I love historical fiction. This story goes back in time to unravel the mystery of how such a different haggahdah would have been written. I recommend it to you all.

Publishers take note: you would've had better sell through if your initial release had been MMPB. I would have dropped $7.99+tax to get my Chess/Terrible fix and the opportunity to check out several new-to-me authors - whose books/series I definitely plan on purchasing in the future. Which makes me wonder how many other people might pass up this volume due to the high cost/iffy pay-off associated with anthologies and no library access. Think about it New York.

Don't let the two stars fool you - this is a great book. I just didn't love the story...even though it was true, which is always an added bonus. I did put the book down having fallen in love with Lucy, which is a testament to Patchett's great writing ability.

You know, I really like this book. Yeah, it's a typical, preachy, accept-everyone-as-they-are type of book, but it has some nice rhymes that will make it accessible to younger kids, it's short as far as prince and princess books tend to go, and it's pretty to look at.

Another good Sean Dillon book. I think I read or listened to this one many years ago, as the story was familiar. But it was great to read again. There are still a few in this series I haven't listened to, so on with the next!
