When are they gonna bust this one as a fake 'memoir'? How could anyone live like this and come out normal? A fabulous, fascinating look at the childhood I'm glad I didn't have!! This is one of the first books I've read in a while that kept me up late.

This is a beautiful, deep, and hugely influential masterpiece by the greatest scribe the western world has known. According to how you choose to read it, it is a book about the mystical dimensions of love, the true nature of the soul, the art of rhetoric, the meaning of the written word, philosophy itself, or any number of other things. It includes some of the most resonant and timeless images for love, yearning, and the human soul found in western literature and has had a profound impact on the christian theological and mystical traditions. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone, it will continue to repay re-readings for a lifetime.

This book might work better as a movie where you tend to suspend your credulity in the enjoyment of watching your favourite actor/actress. I found some of the stereotypes used for the 'baddies' were annoying, too. I've only ever read Brighton Rock before which I liked at the time but clearly this shouldn't have been my next Greene novel to read.
It's one of those boks that "intellectual" types should all read. Abstract and thought provoking.

This book offers such a compassionate and complicated way of looking at the Catholic church in Mexico.
I'm sure that, for its time, this book about trekking through Japan, family in tow, was brilliant. I bet I would have found it funnier if I didn't live here and know first hand (and better than him) about the cultural weirdness that is daily life in Japan. What I CAN tell you is that pretty much everything Barry wrote about in this book still applies today... and it will probably still apply 20 years from now. Japan, as a whole, is not a big fan of change.

go big red!
This was a cute little story. A very quick read. Sad that it ended so quickly.
This is a well written book, heart warming as well.
