By Stephenie Meyer Melanie Stryder is a fighter for herself and her younger brother, Jamie. After she meets Jared she becomes a fighter for him too. But why is she fighting? The world of humanity is on the brink of extinction due to some peace-loving aliens known as ‘souls’. These body-snatching creatures want to re-write our existence. To create a Utopian society. When a unique soul is implanted into Melanie Stryder’s body her life is altered irreparably. Where most humans lose their inner consciousness Melanie is still on the inside fighting. Wanderer has lived on many previous planets but Earth is quite magnificent. Experiencing five senses and extreme emotions are just the beginning. Melanie loves Jamie and Jared and decides to take fate into her own hands. She plagues Wanderer with memories and dreams of those she cared about the most. Slowly allowing Wanderer insight into the world her kind have taken over. The deeper truths. Every person they meet plays a role in not only teaching Wanderer, but also in saving humanity. The souls come from a place where good and bad are as plain as black and white. But through some very difficult and trying circumstances Wanderer learns that sometimes lies are better than the truth, pain is easier than being numb, and life – most importantly goes on. With the help of new and old companions Melanie and Wanderer (or Wanda for short) begin to re-shape the lives of both human and soul. Wanda discovers a passion, zeal at last for a life. One she could die for. Learning that people are capable of change and to be human is a ‘relative’ term. This story is captivating. It takes you to the deepest parts of who we all are. In this world I got swept away and fully through every emotion and hardship. Sometimes there are situations where we are all viewing life through a child’s eyes. And Wanderer shows us just that. That trail and tribulation are the keys to growth and that pain and suffering are the hinges of great joy. I had read this book before and it had value to me then. Now I feel like I can truly understand, truly comprehend the entire novel. I believe it does take a second read to gain that fullness. Melanie and Wanda’s triumphs had me flying high. And every time they fell or failed I felt every bruise and scrape. Every loss I grieved. This book hits each nerve in the human body from love to hate, from joy to sorrow, and from kinship to betrayal. I want to read it again and again. So to say this book is a ten is to call it done. The story is yet to be complete, according to Meyer, and I look very forward to reading The Seeker. For now I will give it a perfect ten just for your intrigue. I do ask you to take the time for yourself, and I warn you it is not a quick read. But it is worth every moment you spend in it. So take my advice and read, then re-read, The Host.

"In this sparkling biography of the famed 18th century revivalist George Whitefield, Mahaffey argues that his enduring importance in American history lies in politics as much as in religion. A masterful stylist, Mahaffey brings fresh perspectives to old arguments and makes them live again in remarkably arresting ways." --Grant Wacker, Professor of Christian History, Duke Divinity School "The revivalist George Whitefield was the best-known person in eighteenth-century America, yet he remains almost forgotten among Americans today. Mahaffey offers a readable and revealing introduction to the life of this brilliant preacher and friend of American liberty." --Thomas S. Kidd, Associate Professor of History, Baylor University, and author of God of Liberty: A Religious History of the American Revolution "Mahaffey has put all students and scholars of the 18th-century transatlantic revivals--events that so hugely shaped both the British and the emerging American cultures--in his debt with this incisive and compelling work. His research will help all who seek to better understand this critically important period by providing new insights into the seminal importance of the too often neglected figure of George Whitefield." --Richard Land, President, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, Southern Baptist Convention "Mahaffey has written an insightful rhetorical genealogy showing how the interplay of religious and political themes of the Great Awakening fostered the birth of a distinctively American republican identity." --John Angus Campbell, Professor Emeritus, Department of Communication, University of Memphis "Mahaffey points out that Whitefield's preaching provided the template for a new way of viewing the world and for Americans to view themselves. ... Students of American history and students of the preaching art will benefit from this book." --The Baptist Standard, September 8, 2011 "Mahaffey shows how Whitefield's bold challenge to settled religious doctrines and hierarchies helped coax the colonies in the direction of independence." --Matt Reynolds, Christianity Today, October 2011

J.R. Moehringer’s experience living 128 steps from Dickens Bar in Manhasset, NY is simultaneously a love story, a coming-of-age story and a tribute to the men who raised him after his father abandoned the family. JR’s colorful collection of honorary uncles (and one real one) are masculine, gruff, and flawed. Uncle Charlie, his mother’s brother, is a bartender at Dickens along with other bartenders and scores of customers. Led by Dickens’ owner Steve, they usher JR into adulthood. “Wandering freely among this unlikely fraternity of alphas, listening to the stories of the soldiers and ballplayers, poets and cops, millionaires and bookies, actors and crooks who leaned nightly against Steve’s bar, I heard them say again and again that the differences among them were great, but the reasons they had come to be so different were slight.” JR demonstrates both his youthful pomposity and his love of language with the delightful list of “big words” he plans to use on his college application: provisional, strident, bucolic, fulcrum, inimical, behemoth, Jesuitical, minion, eclectic, Marquis de Sod [sic:] and esthetic. This honest and refreshing memoir is written by one who definitely loves words and uses them well. The Tender Bar is a love story as well, but between mother and son. Upon graduating from Yale, JR gifts his mother with a Yale class ring, since he couldn’t have gotten in or graduated without her help. Then in the same page, I found myself laughing through the hard lump of tears as sympathy from Fuckembabe came in the form of “Your son, he said to my mother ‘splitches the sploozah like nobody else in this casbah, especially when he walla wallas the umpty boodles, I wanna tell you.’” This beautifully told memoir shares the best and worst of the tender bar who nurtured him.
