Depressing and funny, this sociological exploration of "the evaporation of politics from the public sphere" is a biting look into how Americans explain and engage with each other on political topics (and how they mostly do not). Through observation, participation, and interviews Eliasoph presents individual and group interactions in community volunteer groups, country western dance bars, and local activist groups, and shows how ideas and expectations of "self-interest" in particular stop public debate from even getting started, even in settings that . Self-interest in the sense that: concern for personal (or your children's) health or property value is the only reason to question a proposed hazardous waste incinerator; actively seeking to publicize an issue must be for self-aggrandizement alone; helping other individuals is the only useful effort that a person can make towards addressing social problems. Eliasoph makes it clear that though these were the acceptable public faces people put on issues, in private they were more willing to express broader concerns or expectations. She also explores how officials (city, state, industry) and local media discount the possibility of public debate producing information - discussion as unnecessary as all goals are presumed and all information is from experts. An enjoyable read, and highly non-cynical: the author actively points to alternatives as she finds aspects of each group's behavior self-defeating and unwittingly designed to avoid engagement - the most depressing aspect was recognizing parts of these traits in myself.

Heartbreaking true story about the great elephant Modoc and his keeper. A wonderful written tale, that actually brought a tear in my eye while reading it. An absolute favourite in my bookshelf!

Wow, I feel like I've been reading this book forever now, I'm on page 605 with 192 to go - but it's worth it! The imfamous Becky Sharp is the most self-serving heroine ever, but it's hard not to admire her guts and determination. Thackeray reveals truths about humanity that are still relevant today within the amoral world of 18th-century Vanity Fair. If you never read it in high school, read it now - it's definitely better from an adult perspective.

I was not a big fan of this book. I was sucked into it by all the good reviews surrounding it and I disagree. I find it really hard to get into a book with such an unlikable main charactor. At first I thought it was ok that Lee was immature because she was so young and naive. She kept getting more annoying as the book went on and never grew up during her high school career. Without the main character making any kind of transition, I found this book to be pretty pointless.

Having read this twice in my life, I must say in high school I didn't give it the attention I should have (go figure!). I love this book and the thoughts it provokes!

This one was pretty good. I didn't like this one as much as the City of Ember, but I read the entire thing, which is saying something. The next book, The Prophet of Yonwood, I started reading, but didn't get far. I dunno, it just didn't interest me that much.

I've read all of the alphabet books in the series. After R I felt they were getting a bit slow and I quit reading them. But.. I had to come back to them as I've read ALL of them. Got S and T for Christmas in a few years back and am finally getting to them. I'm enjoying this one. It's keeping me interested to find out where things come out in the end.

Such a great book, I could not put it down. It can get a little hard to follow, with all the going back and forth in time, but just try to stay focused on the big picture, it comes together.

This book is a hard one for me to review. There are parts of the book that I found intriguing, but there were times that I felt that that main character was exceedingly annoying and whiny. I guess to answer the question of whether or not I liked this book I should ask myself another question, am I willing to read the sequel Dead Tossed Waves. Surprisingly my answer is yes, I definitely want to read the sequel. I want to know what is going on. There were too many secrets in this book that were never unraveled, I hope the author will give us some of those answers in Dead Tossed Waves. Mary lives in a village surrounded by high fences that are the only protection they have against the Unconsecrated, beings who have risen from death and hunger for human flesh—yes zombies. When her mother becomes one of the Unconsecrated, Mary’s life begins to fall apart. Her brother, angry that she let her mother become one of the walking dead, sends Mary to the Sisterhood where she is to become one of the sisters instead of getting married. Inside the walls of the Cathedral where the Sisters dwell Mary learns that both the Sisters and the Guardians have been keeping secrets from the people. They know more about what causes the Unconsecrated to return than what they have let on, and they know the secret that somewhere beyond the Forest of Hands and Teeth there may be others living. Mary’s one dream has been to see the ocean her mother spoke about, but trapped behind fences and by the confines of her society, she fears she will never see what is beyond the Forest of Hands and Teeth. This book was intriguing. Sometimes you could really feel how trapped Mary felt she was by both the Sisterhood and her brother. Sometimes she gets a little too obsessive and unpredictable, but that can make her an interesting narrator. I did get frustrated with her obsession over Travis, despite his being taken by someone else. Recommended. Cautions for Sensitive Readers: This book can be violent and gory at times, but is definitely worth reading.
