This book started out beautifully - it felt like a fantastical intermingling of "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Alice in Wonderland". The writing was exquisite. By the second half, though, the story became weird, difficult to follow, and basically unbelievable. I don't mind a little fantasy, but this was farfetched and terribly underdeveloped. Worth reading for the first half, but don't feel too bad if you put it down and never pick it up again. The magic that slowly builds and adds intrigue in the beginning turns out to be a pretty big let down in the end.

For not citing any sources and being one really long, techno-fatal, super optimistic collection of opinion and anecdotes that all lead to the moral: America, you're going to have to try harder, the future depends on it, it was a really enjoyable read full of really interesting stories and fun facts. Some McDonald's outsource their drive-through orders to colorado and then send them back to complete the order! WHOA. Muslims in India are way better at making money than Muslims with oil! WHOA. Can't beat Bush Bashing AND Corporate apologetics in the same book! Capitalism is the new left! YAY!

** spoiler alert ** A continuation of the Pretty Little Liars series that puts most other sequels to shame. I appreciate how the author keeps the girls' lies and secrets age appropriate. Shepard seems to understand that while some secrets may be horrifying to some 7th graders, they seem minor at an older age. So now that the girls are older, their secrets and lies have appropriately aged with them. What was fascinating about their relationship is how just as soon as they are settled in their separate lives with their new besties, it all blows up in their faces leaving them alone again. I hope they find consolation in each other soon. This is similar to what happened last time to them. With the exception of Spencer, they each found another friend to cling to and in the end, they went back to each other. I hope the same pans out for them this time. It was good to see Emily break down. That girl needed a good cry in the last round of books. She showed some well deserved emotion. I loved seeing her beg for forgiveness to Chloe because in the past when someone got mad at her, she let them walk out without much of a struggle. She fought for her friendship and for forgiveness, regardless of her fault and I really think that her character has progressed into a stronger person. It looks as though Spencer and Melissa's relationship has remained stable. I can't, for the life of me, figure out what their mother sees in Mr Pennywhatever. He's clearly crude, gross, and demeaning. Is she mistaking him for an Alpha male? Or is there a deeper reason for her being with him? Not cool of Spencer to out her new friend and future step-brother, but I never trusted him, anyway. And what is up with her future step-sister? Sinister much? Poor Hanna, always too trusting and naive. She clings to anyone willing to give her the slightest compliment and it might really finally be her downfall. I hope Mike forgives her and she manages to get past all this. Oh, and I want to drop kick her father. Aria, in a surprisingly trusting move, gets blindsided by Psycho Blonde. She went against her instincts because, it seems, she was lonely and wanted a friend to laugh with. If Noel does ditch her for Psycho Blonde, then she can do better than him, anyway. And A. Poor A. Back from the dead? Here is my theory... don't scroll down if you don't want potential spoilers. Oh yeah, I feel THAT confident in my theory. *SPOILER ALERT* ***** **** *** ** * I think Ali's crazy family got her plastic surgery after the fire and set her up in a school to start over. But Ali wanted her revenge, of course. So she skips out and follows the girls to Jamaica. Her brother, Jason, goes after her. He sees her fall over the cliff and hides her body to freak the girls out. And now he is texted as A. Yeah, that's right.

With all the awesome reviews I still avoided reading this because it's about video games, but finally I gave in, and it was well worth it! The whole concept is pretty cool and it's a huge nostalgia trip for anyone who grew up in the 80s. It takes place like 40 years from now, when the world is immersed in a gigantic virtual world called the OASIS. They wake up in the morning, put on their helmets, gloves, and suits (if they can afford the suit) and go to work, school, on vacation, just exploring, in the OASIS. The man behind the OASIS, James Halliday, born in 1971, has died and has devised the ultimate quest in which the winner will inherit his company and his wealth. Five years have past since his death and gamers around the world are still searching for the first of three gates in the quest, until it is found by a nobody, Parzival, who has dedicated his life to finding Halliday's Easter Egg. And then the hunt is on. It's as if the first domino is knocked over and all the pieces start falling into place, but at what cost? This is a fun romp through the video games, movies, music, and trivia of the 80's!

Omg, this book DESTROYED ME. Seriously, I haven't cried because of a book like that sense I was 8 and Leslie had died in Bridge to Terabithia... I can't overstate how much I love her writing. Erin Bow's writing is simplistic in the best possible way. Her writing brings to mind authors like Kate DiCamillo (The Tale of Despereaux), Mary Lawson (although she doesn't write YA novels) and Kathi Appelt (The Underneath). To me this makes her writing all the more powerful. And while her writing may be simplistic, her plot and character depth is certainly not. It makes the brutality of the witch hunts all the more realistic. Her writing also allows for her to allude to the dark and sinister without talking about it outright which, in a juvenile novel, I think is quite a feat and in some ways makes the experience all the more terrifying. I would definitely DEFINITELY recommend this book. There is a touch of romance, although (view spoiler).
