** spoiler alert ** Okay. After being so unimpressed with Twilight my expectations for New Moon were pretty low. I found it was slightly better than Twilight in some ways, and then almost worse than Twilight in others. First off my major complaint with the first book was how slow it was and how nothing happened with the story. While this book also had slow portions at least I didn't have to wait until the bitter end of the book to have any sort of excitement. While it certainly wasn't edge of your seat thrills 24/7 it was better than before. Also the writing was slightly better. There were still the odd comments about random thoughts or actions of the characters and Bella's heart still nearly erupts from her chest every time Edward touches her. Over all it was slightly more bearable in that respect. What I disliked the most about the book was Bella herself. In the last story she didn't come across as the best kind of friend to have, but in this story she proved to be a plain horrible person. She was so selfish from beginning to end, rarely taking into account how others may feel about her actions. The big thing in this story was that every single character seemed to take a stupid pill. They made dumb decision after dumb decision. Jacob was crazy about Bella and while she refused to look at him as more than a friend he happy stayed by her side and held her just hoping that things would change. Bella started doing risky things so that she would hear Ed's voice in her head telling her not to do stupid crap. and despite another vampire being after her Bella was chilling out on the beach by herself making herself easy prey. Then while in Italy among like the scariest vampires in the world what happened? Oh nothing. A bunch of conversation. While I assume that we'll be seeing more from these guys in the future it was kind of a let down. Would it have killed Meyer to put in a harrowing chase scene or something? I think more pages were spent on descriptions of walking through underground passages just to get to the Vampires they had to see, than were spent on the actual conversation between them and said vampires. Insane. My favourite parts of the book were with Bella and Jacob. I love the interaction between the two characters. I wanted to scream at Bella so many times for not allowing herself to be close to Jacob the way he wanted her. It just doesn't make sense for an 18 year old girl to pine 4-5 months after the fact for a boy who dumped her and left her in pieces. For a teen 4-5 months might as well be a year. It's something she should have gotten over. So I did like this book better (maybe because there was less Edward :), but that's kind of like saying "I enjoy being shot in the foot better than I like being shot in the leg."
