Read it my senior year of high school. Don't remember loving the book, but I certainly remember enjoying the analysis of it in my AP Lit class...

Picked up the story quite a bit after Foundation's Edge. There was a lot of build up, but the end didn't quite pay off. Middle was good. Ending a little disappointing.

It definitely wasn't as engrossing as the first book. I blame the plot. Not because the plot is necessarily terrible, but because of all the things the plot necessitates. The plot takes them to the desert, and with it, the Carving. And because of this, there are precious few characters present in the book. Which is a difficult situation when you don't necessarily empathize with all of them. Also, the book moves to shifting POVs, which in my opinion, is SUPER distracting. I don't always mind it, but with this book, I did. I almost wanted to read the entire book in Ky's perspective. It was more interesting. Cassia DEFINITELY got on my nerves. (view spoiler) All in all, I did like the book, but not nearly as much as Matched.

I'm ashamed to admit I was looking for an easy chick lit read in this book (escape from dissertation?), but I was pleasantly surprised. Certainly not fluffy chick lit at all! Also, it's a collection of short stories, not a novel, though the same characters are seen throughout most of the stories. It is easy to read, but well-written and there is a nice amount of depth, character development and real feeling in the stories. Jane is a great character, funny, smart and real, and Bank's stories full of feeling and sympathetic human experience.

The ten sephirot provide a pretty amazing paradigm for interpreting and expressing virtue and divinity. While this book is largely academic, it could be useful to someone looking for a practical approach as well.
it was just amazzzziiiinnnggg!!!!
Stunning. Excellent writing (I loved Seabiscuit too), exhaustive research, fascinating subject. It's amazing how much one person can handle, or even be asked to handle, in this life. Louie's story is absolutley, amazing, triumphant and haunting. I have a new appreciation for what my grandfathers went through, especially my Granddad Jones who fought in the Pacific. Laura Hillenbrand does an incomparable job presenting the facts in a style that reads like a novel; I couldn't put it down.

Murakami is so good at creating this very specific sensation when you're done with his books. I don't know exactly how to describe it. Throughout most of the book, I could tell that the ending would decide my overall enjoyment of the book. The first 140 pages or so are good, and enjoyable, but I knew that the last fraction would decide how valuable the lead up is. You can judge by the stars that I enjoyed the ending. Mostly because of Murakami's ability to stir this nameless thing. He brings out this ghastly, wondrous sensation and puts it directly in your world. It's almost frightening. But you have to let it happen.
Want a perfect YA book for the summer? REUNITED is it!!!!! The Pea Pod ( a pea green 1976 VW camper van) houses three ex-best friends, on a less than ideal, two thousand mile road trip to go back in time and see a one-time only reunion concert for their favorite middle school band, Level3. But sometimes, things that are less than ideal have a way of being the best things that ever happened. Take a ride with Alice, Summer and Tiernan--you won't regret it.
