Despite some misgivings I had while reading the book, such as the fact that I felt the author was trying to mimic the magic of the character from Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and that the tragedy-tie between the Dresden bombings and 9-11 were too contrived, I liked this book. It made me sad, it made me laugh and it entertained me. I read it for book club and I started late so I had little time to finish. It kept my attention well enough that I finished in just a few days.

I listened to this on audio CD, read by President Clinton himself. It was nice, hearing the story in his words fully. I didn't pay a lot of attention to politics when he was president--I was young and didn't really care. Plus I grew up in a community of conservatives, so I was told from the time he ran for president that he was evil. Hearing this, reacquainting myself with the historical facts, I was blown away what a difference of years and perspectives makes--and how much of what Clinton faced in office is repeating itself now. I was also horrified that Newt Gingrich could even be seriously considering running for president, based on the flagrant ethical violations he was reprimanded for by Congress. Of course, history is always told by the winners. There were a few moments when I felt like Clinton might be glossing over facts. but most of the time I found myself charmed by his openness and honesty, about feelings and motivations, about relationships, etc. He was surprisingly blunt about his mistake with Monica Lewinsky and how hard he worked to save his marriage/ family after that all came out in the press. I found myself wishing I could have known more of this when he was president. Given him some context to who he was as a person while he served. Considering that I went into this neutral, with little expectations, and only vague memories of the events, I'm impressed how much he won me over. I would say that is good writing (as well as good reading).

I liked this book, in part because I am a fan of this genre. I am saving my insightful comments to share with the girls in book club.

This is a well-written mystery. The characters and sense of place are well developed, and the family drama and mystery keeps you from wanting to put this book down. I think this is the best of the three books by French so far.

The essence of a good author and great story is one that you savor, but can read through quickly. Hillary Jordan is just that and this stunning tale is a combined work of beauty, simplicity and emotional complexity. The story centers around two families in the Mississippi Delta during the 1940's: one white, one black. A particularly moving and sensitive book that explores racism, class divides, the byproducts of war and family relationships, with each theme starkly portrayed and real to the core. I could not help crying when I came to the end. I found myself comparing this novel to The Help and although it's not an entirely fair comparison, I enjoyed Mudbound much, much more. Mudbound will stay with me always.

A must-read for any baseball fan, but also provides a great look at what America was like in the years after WWII. It's clear this book was written by a passionate baseball fan and American.

Howard Gardner, a Harvard Jewish professor of psychology, is famous of his "Multiple Intelligences" theory, in his book "Intelligence Reframed" published in 1999, he outlines 8 types of intelligence: 1] Linguistic: Ability to talk, write & do public communication 2] Logic-Mathematic: Ability to think systematically-logically & chronologically 3] Visual-Spatial: Ability to think & work through the medium of images 4] Musical: You know what it means... 5] Kinesthetic: ability to use body to achieve something remarkable, eq: athletes & comedian 6] Inter-personal: Ability to work effectively with other people, having empathy & understands people's inner motivation & need. eq: Religious leaders & politicians [are thet really do? hmm..:] 7] Intra-personal: Ability to do critical self reflection, eq: Philosopher & thinker 8] Natural: Ability to appreciate & conserve nature Here in this book (Five Minds of the Future- 2007), Gardner advances his idea by giving preposition that based on his multiple intelligences theory and the context of our present complex reality, he outlines 5 kinds of mind critical for the future, they are: 1] Disciplinary Mind - A mastery of a particular branch of knowledge. It's interesting when he said niormally it takles 10 years for somebody to have a litle grasp of mastery of his chosen field 2] Synthesizing Mind. Ability to synthezise many kinds of ideas from many disciplines to a whole integrated unity. 3] Creating Mind - Ability to create new ideas & questions, ability to bring clarity of complicated manners. 4] Respectful Mind - an awareness and appreciation of "the other" or the differences among man. (how many stupid public figure made a stupid racial joke in front of the public and later regret it?) 5] Ethical Mind - an ability to fulfill responsibility as fellow man & citizen I find this book is interesting, well laid out and argued, bit boring sometimes though, while it's not fantastic or ground breaking, it's good overall, I appreciate that Gardner includes ethical & respectful thinking into his description. I reckon schools (elementary to high school) might adopt this kind of cognitive map into their system, and human relations manager might also need to read this one .
