This collection of short stories is extremely description and illustrative of the immigrant experience. It is easy to read and it stretches beyond the diaspora and into the realm of miscommunication in relationships. I have read this collection numerous times and it is wonderful every time.

Dru is one of my favoritemain characters. some books lose steam after one read or earlier but not this book! i may not be on Graves' team or Christophe's team but i am on the same side as Dru. I noticed this book after reading a Vampire Academy book. It was sooo good i had to buy it!

My friend wrote this book. I loved it! Kept my interest throughout the story, feeling along with Gracie her life experiences.
Although the book picked up a bit at the end, I found myself really struggling to finish it. It was very slow and dry, and by the time it became slightly intriguing, I had lost interest for the most part. Maguire isn't a particularly captivating writer, and I probably won't bother to finish the series. I'm most likely in the minority on this one, but I don't really see its appeal. Oh, and the other thing that REALLY bothered me was that an underlying theme of the book was supposed to be about the ideas of good vs. evil...and then Maguire just shoved it all in at the end in 2 pages, when Elphaba was having dinner with Avaric, and the guests were all sharing their ideas about what evil is. Not very subtle.

This book was absolutely excellent. She not only writes a memoir of grief, she uses it as a platform to analyze our society's treatment of grief and how that has evolved through the last 100 years (to our detriment). You literally are going through the grieving process with her, seeing what she sees, feeling what she feels, and you come out almost exhausted at the end of it.
If you ever wanted to know what life is like for an infantryman in a grinding war- read this.
