Very sad, but very funny in places too. How the author managed to pull together a coherent story out of this 'chaotic' homeless person's life is some achievement - though apparently it was Stuart's suggestion that he started with 'now' and went 'backwards'. It works. What's most touching about this book is the genuine but unlikely friendship they developed. You find yourself rooting for Stuart, but also screaming in frustration. Makes you think about the darker things you would rather pretend didn't really happen, and in cosy Cambridge too. Stuart's teacher's letter at the back of the version I read (some freeby from a paper) is all the more poignant knowing what happened.

The story was interesting, after reading so many books where Mary Tudor was only a secondary character, mentioned in passing if mentioned at all. But the writing style was way too flowery for me. It seemed as if the characters were either "good" or "bad" in the author's mind. There didn't seem to be enough duality in the way they were presented. The author seemed determined to give as many happy endings as possible, although anyone who has read anything about Henry VIII knows that for most of his court, the ending is anything but happy. All in all, I would try another book by this author to see if I liked her writing better a second time around.

While I love much of what his name embodies, I could not read this book. The style and content were impossible to embrace.

Dec 2012: Not my favorite in the series, but still great. The kids loved it. Sep 2011: Bad timing with the kids, I think. They just never got interested in the book. We'll try again later.

the o'henry prize collections are always so great because you get to read the work of young writers who have never published before, but happen to have written something brilliant, right next to the work of the likes of alice munro. of course, the material is uneven (the william trevor that the editors liked so much to me was brutally boring) but the highs make up for the lows.
Very worth reading, for so many reasons. Vikram Seth has a lyrical writing style that, I suspect, would make any subject go down like honey. But his subject is not an easy one: he brings to life some of the defining developments of the twentieth century through the personal struggles of the three people whose lives he chronicles: his great uncle, great aunt and himself. Inspiring, harrowing. For those who want an intimate insight into the pain of Nazi Germany - both for the Jews and the Germans - this is a very good source.
One of my favorite childhood novels.
Ack, I'm behind the times! I did not even know this book was out!

This one took me way longer than it should because of all sorts of stuff happening in November/December. The book came highly recommended from my Grandma, as well as other friends. It was a cute story about a teenaged boy in a small town in Georgia in the early 1900's. He learns about being an adult from his experiences from his Grandfather and his crazy antics. The anecdotes he relates are often funny and always heartwarming. I wish I had had more time to read it and get more into it.I will probably have to pick up again in a few years to see if I can get more out of it.
